Mark 13:1-13

13:1 | In commenting on the immense stones of the temple (many of which were comparable in weight to a large jet), the disciples were likely anticipating a messianic takeover of the temple. They were relishing a life of power and prestige ahead, still not realizing the nature of Christ’s kingdom.

13:3-4 | Along with Andrew, the inner circle of Peter, James, and John wanted to know when the temple would be destroyed. In a sermon often called “the Olivet Discourse” (because it was delivered on the Mount of Olives), Jesus gave His men a look into the future. The sermon seems to speak both of the destruction of the city and temple in AD 70 and of the greater cataclysm to come at the end of the age.

13:5-6 | Jesus began His description of future events by emphasizing deception. Many individuals will claim to be the Promised One or Savior. All of them will be frauds – but they will deceive many.

13:7-8 | As the time of the end approaches, wars and rumors of wars will escalate – either in number or intensity. These armed conflicts will involve both nation-states and ethnic groups. Earthquakes, famines, and other disasters will likewise garner more worldwide attention.

13:9-13 | Jesus exhorted His followers to endure to the end, amid all persecution, knowing that because He would ultimately triumph, they will too – if only they will not give up.
