Worship – More than Words of Music

Living our best life begins and ends in Christ.

For to me, to live is Christ and to die is gain. —Philippians 1:21

  • One primary way to live your best life is cultivating a lifestyle of worship. Jesus is our primary example of someone who wholeheartedly worshipped.

Worship starts when our perspective changes.

In your relationships with one another, have the same mindset as Christ Jesus —Philippians 2:5

Therefore, I urge you, brothers, and sisters, in view of God’s mercy, to offer your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and pleasing to God—this is your true and proper worship. 2 Do not conform to the pattern of this world but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God’s will is—his good, pleasing, and perfect will. —Romans 12:1-2

Worship should engage us completely both in Spirit and in Truth.

But the time is coming—indeed it’s here now—when true worshipers will worship the Father in spirit and in truth. The Father is looking for those who will worship him that way. 24 For God is Spirit, so those who worship him must worship in spirit and in truth.” —John 4:23-24

Worship is a sacrifice offering.

  • The ultimate form of worship is not music but our obedience.

You must have the same attitude that Christ Jesus had. 6 Though he was God, he did not think of equality with God as something to cling to. 7 Instead, he gave up his divine privileges; he took the humble position of a slave and was born as a human being. When he appeared in human form, 8 he humbled himself in obedience to God and died a criminal’s death on a cross. —Philippians 2:5-8 NLT

Worship invokes God’s name.

  • God’s nature or character is revealed in His name.

Therefore, God elevated him to the place of highest honor and gave him the name above all other names, 10 that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, in heaven and on earth and under the earth, 11 and every tongue declare that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father. —Philippians 2:9-11 NLT

Let’s Connect

  • What’s one activity that you enjoy so much that requires all your focus?

Let’s Talk About It

Jesus set the ultimate example of true worship as surrendered obedience to the Father. We often think worship is music, but it is so much more than that. Our lives should be offered to God as worship. Everything we do is an opportunity to honor and worship God. When we live a life of surrendered obedience and make pleasing God the focal point, many of our everyday experiences and interactions bring an opportunity to glorify and worship Him.

Romans 12:1-4; Philippians 2:5-11; John 4:23:24

  • Which part of the message impacted or challenged you?

  • Read Romans 12:1-4. Paul wrote, “in view of God’s mercies, to offer your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and pleasing to God—this is your true and proper worship.” What does scripture mean to you?

  • Pastor Randy shared, “Where we put our visual focus, our mind and heart follow.” Where is your focus? What of your time, talents, and treasures can you offer to God as a form of worship?

  • Read Philippians 2:5-11. Jesus set the ultimate example of true worship by modeling a life of obedience to the Father. What would a life of surrendered obedience to God look like for you? Is there something you need to surrender to God? How can this group support you?

  • God’s nature and character is revealed in His name. What’s one name of the Lord you have been viewing, meditating, declaring, and invoking in your present situation? How does declaring the name of the Lord bring focus to your time of worship and prayer?

Take a Step

  • Consider one thing you can do this week to worship God in your everyday life and activities. For example, how might you express worship through your studies as a student? What might this look like in your workplace? In your community? As a parent? As a grandparent?

Here’s My Prayer

Father, You are the mighty God. I declare Your powerful name over every area of my life. Thank You, Jesus, for modeling a life of worship as you lived in surrendered obedience to the Father. I desire to be like You and glorify You in everything I do. In Jesus’ name, amen.
