Serving starts in the mind
…adopt the mind-set of Jesus…—Philippians 2:5 (VOICE)
As a follower of Christ, I must make the choice to become
1. CHOOSE – An intentional act of the mind
2. FOLLOW – Decisions of the heart (Surrender- give up your rights; Submission- take on His will)
3. USE – Do or put into practice
Thinking like a servant
In order to reach the level of servanthood that God desires for me, I must
And so, dear brothers, I plead with you to give your bodies to God. Let them be a living sacrifice, holy—the kind he can accept. When you think of what he has done for you, is this too much to ask? Don’t copy the behavior and customs of this world, but be a new and different person with a fresh newness in all you do and think. Then you will learn from your own experience how his ways will really satisfy you. —Romans 12:1-2 (TLB)
God affirms some unique qualities of those He calls servant
But my servant Caleb thinks differently and follows me completely. —Numbers 14:24 (NCV)
Five attitudes of a servant
…Live with His attitude in your hearts.—Philippians 2:5 (VOICE)
1. Servants focus on others more than themselves
- Not thinking less of myself; Simply thinking of myself less.
Put yourself aside, and help others get ahead. Don’t be obsessed with getting your own advantage. Forget yourselves long enough to lend a helping hand. —Philippians 2:3-4 (MSG)
This is what it means to lose your life for Christ’s sake
And consider the example that Jesus, the Anointed One, has set before us. Let his mindset become your motivation. He existed in the form of God, yet he gave no thought to seizing equality with God as his supreme prize. Instead he emptied himself of his outward glory by reducing himself to the form of a lowly servant. —Philippians 2:5-7 (TPT)
2. Servants think like stewards, not owners
The earth and all that’s upon it belong to the Eternal.
The world is His, with every living creature on it. —Psalms 24:1 (VOICE)
The one thing required of such servants is that they be faithful to their master. —1 Corinthians 4:2 (GNT)
