Use the following questions and directions based on today’s sermon as a starting point for spiritual discussions with your family or a small group of Christian friends this week.
Fellowship – Relationships with a Purpose
- Who is the most intimidating person you’ve ever respected? What makes them intimidating? What makes them respectable?
Growth – Thinking About Spiritual Matters
- When God is described as “awesome,” what other adjectives come to mind? Are they more connected to amazement or to dread? Explain your answer.
- How is the fear of God different than any other type of fear?
- Read Matthew 10:28. Why is it right to fear God? How often do you consider this life-ending power of God’s? How does it motivate you to share the gospel?
- What are the three “omni” words that describe characteristics of God, and what do they mean? (Start typing “God is omni” in a Google search if you need help). Why might these qualities make God terrifying? What qualities of God keep them from being terrifying?
- Read Nahum 1:2-8. How do you feel after reading this description of God’s wrath? Should the Christian fear God’s judgment? Why or why not?
- Read Proverbs 14:27. Explain its meaning in your own words.
- Read Revelation 1:12-18. Is this the image of Jesus you regularly picture? How is it similar or different? Does it cause you to have more or less fear (awe/reverence) of Him? Why?
- How can the fear of God motivate you to serve others better?
- Would your family or friends think about your reverence for Him when thinking about God? How can you build up your awe for Him?
- What have you learned from this sermon series? Share your biggest takeaways from “Fear Not!”
Prayer – Taking Your Thoughts to God
- Pray for your respect and awe of God to increase. Ask Him to remind you of his awesome power, and then praise Him for it!
