CORE: Health Requires Hard Work

Senior Pastor Jeff Maness
October 13, 2024

Health Requires Hard Work - Followers of Jesus must work hard to carefully nurture their own spiritual, emotional, relational, physical, and financial health as we continually grow in likeness to Christ.

God saved you by his grace when you believed. And you can’t take credit for this; it is a gift from God. 9 Salvation is not a reward for the good things we have done, so none of us can boast about it. —Ephesians 2:8-9

Work hard to show the results of your salvation, obeying God with deep reverence and fear. —Philippians 2:12b

So, dear brothers and sisters, work hard to prove that you really are among those God has called and chosen. —2 Peter 1:10a

For we are God’s masterpiece. He has created us anew in Christ Jesus, so we can do the good things he planned for us long ago. —Ephesians 2:10

Big Question: What does a healthy hard work look like?
Main Scripture: 2 Peter 1:3-11

By his divine power, God has given us everything we need for living a godly (healthy) life. We have received all of this by coming to know him, the one who called us to himself by means of his marvelous glory and excellence. —2 Peter 1:3

What does a healthy hard work look like?
1. It is fueled by God’s power.

Eusebeia – Someone’s inner response to the things of God which shows itself in godly reverence.

For God is working in you, giving you the desire and the power to do what pleases him. —Philippians 2:13

What does a healthy hard work look like?
1. It is fueled by God’s power.
2. It has faith in God’s promises.

And because of his glory and excellence, he has given us great and precious promises. These are the promises that enable you to share his divine nature and escape the world’s corruption caused by human desires. —2 Peter 1:4

They refer to our salvation and forgiveness of sin; strength, comfort, and support in trial; a glorious resurrection; and a happy immortality. They go beyond our reasoning powers and relates to what we could not otherwise obtain on our own. —Albert Barnes

I also pray that you will understand the incredible greatness of God’s power for us who believe him. This is the same mighty power 20 that raised Christ from the dead and seated him in the place of honor at God’s right hand in the heavenly realms. —Ephesians 1:19-20

I believe God. The same power that raised Christ from the dead is available to me and lives in me. I live in and from the power of the resurrection.

I have supernatural, resurrection, roll the stone away power coursing through my heart, soul, mind, and strength to love and follow Jesus.

What does a healthy hard work look like?
1. It is fueled by God’s power.
2. It has faith in God’s promises.
3. It is formed by my pursuits.

In view of all this, make every effort to respond to God’s promises. Supplement your faith with a generous provision of moral excellence, and moral excellence with knowledge, 6 and knowledge with self-control, and self-control with patient endurance, and patient endurance with godliness, 7 and godliness with brotherly affection, (kindness) and brotherly affection with love for everyone. 8 The more you grow like this, the more productive and useful you will be in your knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ. 9 But those who fail to develop in this way are shortsighted or blind, forgetting that they have been cleansed from their old sins. 10 So, dear brothers and sisters, work hard to prove that you really are among those God has called and chosen. Do these things, and you will never fall away. —2 Peter 1:5-10

The essential idea in the passage before us seems to be, that in our religion we are not to be satisfied with one virtue, or one class of virtues, but that there is to be a diligent cultivation of all our virtues. A progress made from one virtue to another, seeking to reach the highest possible point in our religion; and, we are to endeavor to add on one after another until we have become possessed of all. —Albert Barnes

What does a healthy hard work look like?
1. It is fueled by God’s power.
2. It has faith in God’s promises.
3. It is formed by my pursuits.
4. It looks forward to paradise.

Then God will give you a grand entrance into the eternal Kingdom of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. —2 Peter 1:11
