SERMON DISCUSSION GUIDE

MAIN IDEA
“My hope is that the Spirit of God is stirring in many of your hearts — even right now — to trust in God’s love for you as displayed in his Son. God is not abusive. He doesn’t demand that we work our way to him. He knows — in fact — that it’s impossible for us to ascend to Heaven on our own. Which is why Jesus came to earth — he came to us because he knew that we couldn’t come to him.”

DEEPER

Paul contrasts “righteousness based on the law” with “righteousness based on faith.” How would you explain the difference to someone who believes their good deeds can save them?

Word Study: Look at the term “righteousness” (Greek: dikaiosynē) in other passages of the Bible. How does this shape our understanding of being right with God?

Pastor Josh mentioned how futile it is to rely on obeying the law for salvation. Why do you think humans are naturally drawn to works-based righteousness?

How does Ephesians 2:8-9 reinforce the truth of salvation by faith alone? Discuss how this impacts our view of God’s grace.

Trace the theme of God’s impartiality through Scripture. How can this shape the way we share the gospel? How might this be relevant in our view of modern culture?

Romans 5:1-5, Romans 7:4-6 and Romans 8:9-11 all highlight the Spirit’s work in salvation and his role in our lives. What evidence of the Spirit’s work have you seen in your life or the lives of others recently?

Who in your life might need to hear that salvation is available to “‘everyone who calls on the name of the Lord”? Pray as a group for opportunities to share this truth with someone this week and discuss specific ways to do so.

What stood out to you in this week’s sermon? What were your biggest takeaways?
