Blessed With Poverty

The Beatitudes

“God blesses those who are poor and realize their need for him, for the Kingdom of Heaven is theirs. 4 God blesses those who mourn, for they will be comforted. 5 God blesses those who are humble, for they will inherit the whole earth. 6 God blesses those who hunger and thirst for justice, for they will be satisfied. 7 God blesses those who are merciful, for they will be shown mercy. 8 God blesses those whose hearts are pure, for they will see God. 9 God blesses those who work for peace, for they will be called the children of God. 10 God blesses those who are persecuted for doing right, for the Kingdom of Heaven is theirs. —Matthew 5:3-10

Big Question: What does it mean to be poor in Spirit?

What does it mean to be poor in Spirit?
1. I bring nothing to God.

The first Beatitude is the sum and substance of the whole sermon. Poverty of spirit stands in contrast to self-sufficiency. —Pulpit Commentary

To be “poor in spirit” is to be conscious of one’s continual dependence on God. As long as you think you are rich in spirit, you’ll actually be independent and proud. Only by being desperately dependent on God can you become what He created you to be. —Tony Evans

Our imaginary goodness is more hard to conquer than our actual sin. —Charles Spurgeon

What does it mean to be poor in Spirit?
1. I bring nothing to God.
2. I have nothing without God.

Christ is the visible image of the invisible God. He existed before anything was created and is supreme over all creation, 16 for through him God created everything in the heavenly realms and on earth. He made the things we can see and the things we can’t see — such as thrones, kingdoms, rulers, and authorities in the unseen world. Everything was created through him and for him. 17 He existed before anything else, and he holds all creation together. —Colossians 1:15-17

For everything comes from him and exists by his power and is intended for his glory. All glory to him forever! Amen. —Romans 11:36

The meaning is, that the existence, order, and arrangement of all creation are continued by His power. If unsupported by Him, it would fall into disorder, or sink back to nothing. —Albert Barnes

He upholds all things by the word of His power; the heavens have their stability and continuance from Him; the pillars of the earth are bore up by Him, otherwise that and the inhabitants of it would be dissolved. —John Gill

What does it mean to be poor in Spirit?
1. I bring nothing to God.
2. I have nothing without God.
3. I can do nothing apart from God.

“Yes, I am the vine; you are the branches. Those who remain in me, and I in them, will produce much fruit. For apart from me you can do nothing. —John 15:5

All praise to God, the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who has blessed us with every spiritual blessing in the heavenly realms because we are united with Christ. —Ephesians 1:3

Reflection:

🔹 What area of my life have I been comparing to others and not Jesus?

🔹 What parts of my life have I believed I can hold together?

🔹 What lies am I believing that keep me from remaining in Christ?
