Growing In Grace – Day of the Lord (2 Peter 3:10-13)
What does the Day of the Lord do for you?
What is the Day of the Lord?
The Day of the Lord is a common theme throughout all Scripture. It is in prophecy, apocalyptic, New Testment epistles, and the Gospels.
It refers to a time of judgment.
The “Day of the Lord” is a technical term pointing to the special interventions of God in human history for judgment. —John MacArthur
When is the Day of the Lord?
While we do not have a date, Peter described it as a “thief in the night.”
If it is a common theme in Scripture, why will it be a surprise?
The Day of the Lord isn’t even something we can know the date.
Jesus said…
6Therefore, when they had come together, they asked Him, saying, “Lord, will You at this time restore the kingdom to Israel?” 7And He said to them, “It is not for you to know times or seasons which the Father has put in His own authority. —Acts 1:6-7
The Apostle Paul said…
1But concerning the times and the seasons, brethren, you have no need that I should write to you. 2For you yourselves know perfectly that the day of the Lord so comes as a thief in the night. —1 Thessalonians 5:1-2
What message does the Day of the Lord deliver?
10But the Day of the Lord will come as a thief in the might, in which the heavens will pass away with a great noise, and the elements will melt with fervent heat; both the earth and the works that are in it will be burned up. —2 Peter 3:10
13Nevertheless we, according to His promise, look for new heavens and a new earth in which righteousness dwells. —2 Peter 3:13
ONE promise!
NEW heaven. NEW earth. NEW body.
39All flesh is not the same flesh, but there is one kind of flesh of men, another flesh of animals, another of fish, and another of birds. 40There are also celestial bodies and terrestrial bodies; but the glory of the celestial is one, and the glory of the terrestrial is another. 41There is one glory of the sun, another glory of the moon, and another glory of the stars; for one star differs from another star in glory. 42So also is the resurrection of the dead. The body is sown in corruption, it is raised in incorruption. 43It is sown in dishonor, it is raised in glory. It is sown in weakness, it is raised in power. 44It is sown a natural body, it is raised a spiritual body. There is a natural body, and there is a spiritual body. 45And so it is written, “The first man Adam became a living being.” The last Adam became a life-giving spirit. —1 Corinthians 15:39-45
11Therefore, since all these things will be dissolved, what manner of persons ought you to be in holy conduct and godliness, 12looking for and hastening the coming of the day of God, because of which the heavens will be dissolved, being on fire, and the elements will melt with fervent heat. —2 Peter 3:11-12
Peter had this discussion with Jesus…
6Therefore, when they had come together, they asked Him, saying, “Lord, will You at this time restore the kingdom to Israel?” 7And He said to them, “It is not for you to know times or seasons which the Father has put in His own authority. 8But you shall receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you; and you shall be witnesses to Me in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the end of the earth.” —Acts 1:6-8
Paul had this discussion with the church at Thessalonica…
5You are all sons of light and sons of the day. We are not of the night nor of darkness. 6Therefore let us not sleep, as others do, but let us watch and be sober. 7For those who sleep, sleep at night, and those who get drunk are drunk at night. 8But let us who are of the day be sober, putting on the breastplate of faith and love, and as a helmet the hope of salvation. —1 Thessalonians 5:5-8
No DESPAIR.
No FEAR.
No DEFEAT.
What would your life look like if you lived with this in mind?
