“Therefore let all Israel be assured of this: God has made this Jesus, whom you crucified, both Lord and Messiah. When the people heard this, they were cut to the heart and said to Peter and the other apostles, ‘Brothers, what shall we do?’” —Acts 2:36-37 NIV
In Acts 2, after Peter delivered a powerful sermon at Pentecost, his words profoundly impacted the hearts of his listeners. They were “cut to the heart” and urgently asked, “What shall we do?” This moment of conviction brought them to a point of decision—a call to respond in obedience to the revelation they had received.
The Call to Immediate Response: The people’s response to Peter’s declaration that Jesus is both Lord and Messiah was immediate. They recognized the truth and felt the weight of their situation, leading them to seek direction. This illustrates a vital aspect of faith: it calls for action, not just acknowledgment. When we encounter God through prayer and His Word, and He directs us, delaying our response can mean missing out on the fullness of life with Him.
The Cost of Delayed Obedience: Delayed obedience is often disobedience. When God gives us clear direction we must take steps to follow, putting off these steps can hinder our spiritual growth and the blessings intended for us and others through these acts. Each day delayed is an opportunity missed to walk in step with God and experience His presence in our actions.
Walking in Step with Christ: Responding to God’s call isn’t about earning salvation; it’s about experiencing life with Christ. When God directs us and we follow, we align ourselves with His will, participating in His kingdom work here on earth. If we ignore His direction, we may find ourselves feeling isolated and alone, missing the joy and community that obedience brings.
Encouragement:
As followers of Christ, let us be people who respond promptly to God’s call. Whether it’s a prompting to serve, give, or step out in faith in a new area, our quick obedience is an expression of our trust in Him. Remember, our journey with Christ is filled with continuous steps of obedience, each one leading to deeper experiences of His love and grace.
