12.15.24 - Ghosts of Christmas (Week 2)
Part of Ghosts of Christmas (Message Notes)
December 11, 2024

Today’s Theme:
Overcoming the labels that hold us back

Guilt vs Shame
Guilt says, “I did something bad.” Shame says, “I am bad.”

Shame Based Mindset

* We are vulnerable to perfectionism

* We are critical of ourselves and of others.

* Our self-defeating thoughts are used as a form of protection and escape.

Isaiah 54:4
4  “Do not be afraid; you will not be put to shame. Do not fear disgrace; you will not be humiliated.
You will forget the shame of your youth…

1 John 1:9
9  If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and purify us from all
unrighteousness.

Soul Murder: “[The] destroying of someone’s personality, the sense of their own aliveness,” –
Dr. James Gilligan

Slave - “A person who has the (legal) status of being the property of another, has no personal
freedom or rights, and is used as forced labor or as an unpaid servant.” Oxford English
Dictionary

Slave Mentality – “Having the mind of a slave — that is, thinking like someone who has no
freedom or personal rights.”

“I freed a thousand slaves. I could have freed a thousand more if only they knew they were
slaves.” – Harriet Tubman

Numbers 14:1-4
1  That night all the members of the community raised their voices and wept aloud.  2  All the
Israelites grumbled against Moses and Aaron, and the whole assembly said to them, “If only we
had died in Egypt! Or in this wilderness!  3  Why is the Lord bringing us to this land only to let us
fall by the sword? Our wives and children will be taken as plunder. Wouldn’t it be better for us to
go back to Egypt?”  4  And they said to each other, “We should choose a leader and go back to
Egypt.”

“You are still believing that you are something that God says you are not!”

To heal from shame, we move the focus from what I'm not; to who Christ is.

I am not .
Because of Christ I am
.

Joshua 5:9 (NLT)
9  Then the Lord said to Joshua, “Today I have rolled away the shame of your slavery in Egypt.”
