The Power of Hope

• Jesus’ birth, death, and resurrection moved the temple from a place to a

.

Do you not know that you are the temple of God and that the Spirit of God dwells in you?
1 Corinthians 3:16

You surely know that you are like God’s special house. As God’s people, God’s Spirit lives in you.
1 Corinthians 3:16

What is hope?

Hope is a belief for better days that changes us in the present.

“Hope is not about the future; Hope is about the present … It obviously has to do with the future, but it’s a virtue which is cultivated in the present. It fills the present with energy. It connects the two comings of Jesus, so that we now participate in them. We’re not just remembering the one and believing in the other; we are participating in … the continuity of the comings.” —Author, Eugene Peterson

• Hope is living with expectation today based on the

of God and the of Christ.

2 “This is what the Lord, the God of Israel, says: Write down for the record everything I have said to you, Jeremiah. 3 For the time is coming when I will restore the fortunes of my people of Israel and Judah. I will bring them home to this land that I gave to their ancestors, and they will possess it again. I, the Lord, have spoken!”
Jeremiah 30:2-3

14 “‘The days are coming,’ declares the Lord, ‘when I will fulfill the good promise I made to the people of Israel and Judah. 15 “‘In those days and at that time I will make a righteous Branch sprout from David’s line; he will do what is just and right in the land. 16 In those days Judah will be saved and Jerusalem will live in safety. This is the name by which it will be called: The Lord Our Righteous Savior.’”
Jeremiah 33:14-16

God made him who had no sin to be sin for us, so that in him we might become the righteousness of God.
2 Corinthians 5:21

Our Hope:

“The virgin will conceive and give birth to a son, and they will call him Immanuel” (which means “God with us”).
Matthew 1:23

2 Consider it pure joy, my brothers and sisters, whenever you face trials of many kinds, 3 because you know that the testing of your faith produces perseverance. 4 Let perseverance finish its work so that you may be mature and complete, not lacking anything.
James 1:2-4

6 So be truly glad. There is wonderful joy ahead, even though you must endure many trials for a little while. 7 These trials will show that your faith is genuine. It is being tested as fire tests and purifies gold—though your faith is far more precious than mere gold.
1 Peter 1:6,7a,b

9 “This, then, is how you should pray: ‘Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name, 10 your kingdom come, your will be done, on earth as it is in heaven.’”
Matthew 6:9,10

3 And I heard a loud voice from the throne saying, “Look! God’s dwelling place is now among the people, and he will dwell with them. They will be his people, and God himself will be with them and be their God. 4 ‘He will wipe every tear from their eyes. There will be no more death’ or mourning or crying or pain, for the old order of things has passed away.” 5 He who was seated on the throne said, “I am making everything new!” Then he said, “Write this down, for these words are trustworthy and true.”
Revelation 21:3-5

• Hope

us today.

• Hope

us to risk tomorrow.

And this hope will not lead to disappointment. For we know how dearly God loves us, because he has given us the Holy Spirit to fill our hearts with his love.
Romans 5:5
