Towels Over Titles

Series Introduction

23 So He said to them, “….to sit on My right hand and on My left is not Mine to give, but it is for those for whom it is prepared by My Father.”
24 And when the ten heard it, they were greatly displeased with the two brothers. 25 But Jesus called them to Himself and said, “You know that the rulers of the Gentiles lord it over them, and those who are great exercise authority over them. 26 Yet it shall not be so among you; but whoever desires to become great among you, let him be your servant. 27 And whoever desires to be first among you, let him be your slave— 28 just as the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give His life a ransom for many.” —Matthew 20:23-28 (NKJV)

Greatness isn’t measured by how high you rise, but by how many you raise as you serve.

Introduction

23 So He said to them, “….to sit on My right hand and on My left is not Mine to give, but it is for those for whom it is prepared by My Father.” —Matthew 20:23 (NKJV)

Greatness isn’t found in the title; it’s discovered with a towel.

Understanding My Why Behind The Towel:

1. Serve Because It’s the to True Greatness

35 He sat down, called the twelve disciples over to him, and said, “Whoever wants to be first must take last place and be the servant of everyone else.” —Mark 9:35 (NLT)

In heaven’s economy, greatness is measured by how low you’ll go to lift others high.

2. Serve Because I’ve Been For It

10 God has given each of you a gift from his great variety of spiritual gifts. Use them well to serve one another. —1 Peter 4:10 (NLT)

Some gifts shine on stage; others shine in secret — but both shine for His glory.

3. Serve Because Jesus It

12 After washing their feet, he put on his robe again and sat down and asked, “Do you understand what I was doing? 13 You call me ‘Teacher’ and ‘Lord,’ and you are right, because that’s what I am. 14 And since I, your Lord and Teacher, have washed your feet, you ought to wash each other’s feet. 15 I have given you an example to follow. Do as I have done to you. 16 I tell you the truth, slaves are not greater than their master. Nor is the messenger more important than the one who sends the message. 17 Now that you know these things, God will bless you for doing them. —John 13:12-17 (NLT)

If serving is beneath you, then leadership is beyond you.

Conclusion

In God’s Kingdom, we don’t climb ladders — we carry towels.

My Next Steps

  1. Rethink my gift by recognizing that my ability to work, serve, and help is my gift from God, look for ways to serve 3 people.
  2. Refocus my greatness by stop measuring greatness by applause or attention and reengage in my serving opportunity with renewed perspective.
  3. Replicate Jesus’ model by picking up the towel in my home, my church, my job — doing the unseen, humble things because that’s how Jesus leads.

Be Great Day – Information Paper

Saturday, May 31

What is Be Great Day?

Be Great Day is an opportunity for every attendee of Bahamas Harvest Church to step outside the walls of the church and demonstrate the love of Christ through acts of service. Whether big or small, every act of service makes a difference.

We’re encouraging you, your family, your friends, your small group, or your serving team to plan and complete a serving project on Saturday, May 31.

The goal is simple: show up, serve, and let the love of Jesus be seen through you.

Guidelines for Serving Projects:

Plan a project that can be done solo or as a group (family, friends, small group, serving team)
Project must be completed on Saturday, May 31
Project can range from 1 minute to 10 hours
Wear your Bahamas Harvest Church branded polo shirt or T-shirt while serving
Take photos and post on social media using the hashtag #BeGreat
