SMALL GROUP QUESTIONS

Warm Up Question: Long-distance runners talk about “hitting the wall” in a race. Describe a time in your life when you “hit the wall.” (School, Relationships, Job, etc.)?

HEAD: These questions help us examine the Word.
1. Read Joshua 14:6-12 and discuss the qualities that made Caleb a person with “a different spirit”:
2. Patience. Nobody likes to wait, but some people seem to get more resilient and others just get cranky and irritable. What are some keys to getting better instead of bitter?
3. Courage. What did you think of Andy Stanley’s definition of courage? “Courage is clarity around and unreasonable commitment to what should be.” It seems like the longer we are in the race (which is just a nice way of saying the older we get) there is a tendency to shy away from risk. Is that a good thing, a bad thing or a little of both? Why?
4. Wholehearted commitment. What do you think of Tim’s statement that as he gets older, the list of things he considers to be important gets shorter, not longer? How do commitments serve as priority tie-breakers?
5. Unwavering faith. How do we keep faith strong in seasons when we are waiting for God to move?
6. A forward-thinking attitude. The longer we are in the race there is a tendency to concentrate on conserving the territory we have instead of charging new hills? Why is that?

HEART: These questions help us wrestle with what we believe.
7. Which one of the five qualities is an area you struggle with?

HAND: These questions help us bring truth and beliefs into our everyday life.
8. What is a practical step you can take this week to renew your strength to keep running your race?
