SERMON NOTES: LUKE 22:24-38

An inflated view of self leads to spiritual blindness.

Each day Jesus was teaching at the temple, and each evening he went out to spend the night on the hill called the Mount of Olives, and all the people came early in the morning to hear him at the temple. —Luke 21:37-38

Realize that you can simultaneously be a saved

and be completely spiritually blind.

LUKE 22:24-30 // JESUS TEACHES REALITY ON GREATNESS

A dispute also arose among them as to which of them was considered to be greatest. Jesus said to them, “The kings of the Gentiles lord it over them; and those who exercise authority over them call themselves Benefactors. But you are not to be like that. Instead, the greatest among you should be like the youngest… —Luke 22:24-26a

It’s almost frightening to think that after Jesus poured three years of His life into these men; after they saw the character of Jesus on display in almost every conceivable circumstance; that now, at the final hours before His betrayal, arrest, and crucifixion, they

about which of them was the greatest.

Because the disciples are focused on themselves (on their own status) they are completely blind to what is

happening and how the world is about to be turned upside down.

Jesus calls out the disciple’s self-obsession. They are acting no better than spiritually blind, corrupt elite

of the world vying for power, wealth, and reputation.

The evening meal was in progress, and the devil had already prompted Judas, the son of Simon Iscariot, to betray Jesus. Jesus knew that the Father had put all things under his power, and that he had come from God and was returning to God; so he got up from the meal, took off his outer clothing, and wrapped a towel around his waist. After that, he poured water into a basin and began to wash his disciples’ feet, drying them with the towel that was wrapped around him. —John 13:2-5

When he had finished washing their feet, he put on his clothes and returned to his place. “Do you understand what I have done for you?” he asked them. “You call me ‘Teacher’ and ‘Lord,’ and rightly so, for that is what I am. Now that I, your Lord and Teacher, have washed your feet, you also should wash one another’s feet. I have set you an example that you should do as I have done for you. —John 13:12-15

But you are not to be like that. Instead, the greatest among you should be like the youngest, and the one who rules like the one who serves. For who is greater, the one who is at the table or the one who serves? Is it not the one who is at the table? But I am among you as one who serves. —Luke 22:26-27

Jesus established a new

of Greatness: In the world’s order the greatest people are served, but in the Kingdom of God true greatness is in serving others.

You are those who have stood by me in my trials. And I confer on you a kingdom, just as my Father conferred one on me, so that you may eat and drink at my table in my kingdom and sit on thrones, judging the twelve tribes of Israel. —Luke 22:28-30

But they were also missing their unique positions as being chosen by Jesus as Apostles. They were so worried about greatness on earth that they were missing the unique

Jesus had in store for them.

And he carried me away in the Spirit to a mountain great and high, and showed me the Holy City, Jerusalem, coming down out of heaven from God. It shone with the glory of God, and its brilliance was like that of a very precious jewel, like a jasper, clear as crystal. It had a great, high wall with twelve gates, and with twelve angels at the gates. On the gates were written the names of the twelve tribes of Israel. There were three gates on the east, three on the north, three on the south and three on the west. The wall of the city had twelve foundations, and on them were the names of the twelve apostles of the Lamb. —Revelation 21:10-14

Jesus is saying, “You are so worried about who is greatest that you’re missing the point. I’ve already

you so you will have your place of leadership over the twelve tribes.”

In order to lead you need to learn to serve. So quit worrying about worldly greatness and get great at focusing on

others.

LUKE 22:31-34 // JESUS PREDICTS PETER’S DENIAL

“Simon, Simon, Satan has asked to sift all of you as wheat. But I have prayed for you, Simon, that your faith may not fail. And when you have turned back, strengthen your brothers.”
But he replied, “Lord, I am ready to go with you to prison and to death.”
Jesus answered, “I tell you, Peter, before the rooster crows today, you will deny three times that you know me.” —Luke 22:31-34

Satan wanted to

each disciple as wheat, which meant that he wished to shake Peter (and the other disciple’s) faith in Jesus so forcefully that they would each fall, proving that God’s chosen men were lacking and that Jesus was an utter failure.

If we could have our way we would escape every ounce of pain and trials. Instead, we are obsessed with comfort, safety and perfection because none of us like to suffer or fail. But that is spiritual blindness as to how the Lord works because it is through trials, suffering, and mistakes that we

.

Not only does God

the sifting process to develop our character, but also to develop our confidence in Him. We discover that God is able to carry us through any trial or suffering we face and any mistake we make.

A biblical view of self leads to serving others.

Simon Peter was a rugged, blue collar, fisherman ready to do battle with anybody. Courage was one of Peter’s strong points. It was a virtue he’d depended upon his whole life. Yet his flesh-powered courage was about to fail him. When what we

upon to get by in life fails, it is only then that we learn to truly rely upon the Lord.

Peter was brave because of how he felt in the moment. But self-confident courage is merely a virtuous form of

. Peter’s self-reliance inflated his ego to the point that he was blind to the weakness of his own flesh, the spiritual reality, and the spiritual battle that Jesus could see.

THE IRREFUTABLE LAWS OF STRENGTHS & WEAKNESSES
1. Where I am strong and think I can handle it; I am less likely to rely upon the Lord then in areas where I am weak and I know it.
2. Me at my best, in my greatest strengths, are not a match for Satan.
3. Only Jesus can redeem our failures, which is why He allows us to fail even in our areas of strength.

LUKE 22:35-38 // JESUS WARNS THEM THE WAR IS ABOUT TO REV UP

Then Jesus asked them, “When I sent you without purse, bag or sandals, did you lack anything?”
“Nothing,” they answered.
He said to them, “But now if you have a purse, take it, and also a bag; and if you don’t have a sword, sell your cloak and buy one. It is written: ‘And he was numbered with the transgressors’; and I tell you that this must be fulfilled in me. Yes, what is written about me is reaching its fulfillment.”
The disciples said, “See, Lord, here are two swords.”
“That’s enough!” he replied. —Luke 22:35-38

Jesus is saying, “Last time I sent you out without a wallet, money, or supplies, you

that I will provide for you when you are representing me.”

In other words, “Last time was easy, but this time boys… Things are

. What is about to happen will be more difficult than you can possibly imagine. So be prepared and get ready.”

Therefore I will give him a portion among the great,
and he will divide the spoils with the strong,
because he poured out his life unto death,
and was numbered with the transgressors.
For he bore the sin of many,
and made intercession for the transgressors. —Isaiah 53:12

The disciples had already moved forward, by their own initiative, purchased two swords without Jesus telling them to. This was an act of

just in case Jesus couldn’t protect himself.

An inflated view of self leads to spiritual blindness.
A biblical view of self leads to serving others.

Any time the spiritual war is rev’ing up, it is not the time to stress about earthly comforts, security, and human greatness. Instead, it’s time to

people and love them so they can find Jesus as King too.
