DON’T TRADE

Text: Gen.13:9-11; 19:30

Gen. 13:9-11
9 Is not the whole land before thee? separate thyself, I pray thee, from me: if thou wilt take the left hand, then I will go to the right; or if thou depart to the right hand, then I will go to the left.

10 And Lot lifted up his eyes, and beheld all the plain of Jordan, that it was well watered every where, before the Lord destroyed Sodom and Gomorrah, even as the garden of the Lord, like the land of Egypt, as thou comest unto Zoar.

11 Then Lot chose him all the plain of Jordan; and Lot journeyed east: and they separated themselves the one from the other.

Gen. 19:30
And Lot went up out of Zoar, and dwelt in the mountain, and his two daughters with him; for he feared to dwell in Zoar: and he dwelt in a cave, he and his two daughters.

1. Lot Traded What He Wanted Most For What He Wanted In The Moment

  • Then Lot chose him… In that very moment he wanted the land, the well watered land, the good looking land. But when he chose it, he was also choosing a life, a lifestyle, and a future that he probably didn’t know that he was choosing and an outcome that he definitely didn’t want.
  • He traded what he wanted most for what he wanted in the moment.

  • What led to him making his choice?

    1) Lot made his choice based on

    . (v. 10)

    2) Lot made his choice based on

    and . (vv. 10-11)

    3) Lot made his choice without

    God. (v. 11)

    • The bigger the consequences (either good or bad) to the choice we have before us, the more we need to seek will.

    4) Lot made his choice without consulting

    . (v. 11)

    • The bigger the consequences (either good or bad) to the choice we have before us, the more we need to seek the of others.

    5) Lot made his choice in

    . (v. 11)

2. Costly Consequences Of A Bad Trade

  • What losses did Lot experience?

    1) The loss of peace and strength. (cf. 2 Pet. 2:7-8)

    2) The loss of possessions. (Gen. 14-19)

    3) The loss of

    valuables. (Gen. 19)

3. Don’t Trade What You Want Most For What You Want In The Moment

  • Refusing to trade down is not a one time choice. It is a series of choices that lead to and are in line with the reality of living a life for what you truly want most, the invaluable intangibles of life, marriage, family, relationships, honor, integrity, influence, legacy, etc.

  • Refusing to trade down is a series of choices.

  • Three keys to choosing:

    1)

    on God. (vv. 14-15)

    2)

    with God. (v. 17)

    3)

    God. (v. 18)

Bottom-line: Don’t trade what you want for what you want in the .
