From Compromise to Commitment

1 Corinthians 5–7

Chapter 5 — THE CRISIS OF COMPROMISE

It is actually reported that there is sexual immorality among you… 1Corinthians 5:1 (NIV)

What causes compromise?

  1. WE BECOME

    .

Flee from sexual immorality… 1 Corinthians 6:18 (NIV)

  2. WE CONFUSE

    WITH .

And you are proud! Shouldn’t you rather have been filled with grief and have put out of your fellowship the man who did this? 1 Corinthians 5:2 (NIV)

Your boasting is not good. Don’t you know that a little yeast works through the whole batch of dough? 1 Corinthians 5:6 (NIV)

  3. WE

    OURSELVES TO .

We do not dare to classify or compare ourselves with some who commend themselves.
When they measure themselves by themselves and compare themselves with themselves, they are not wise. 2 Corinthians 10:12 (NIV)

Chapter 6 — THE CALL TO COMMITMENT

Do you not know that the wicked will not inherit the kingdom of God? Do not be deceived: Neither the sexually immoral nor idolaters nor adulterers nor male prostitutes nor homosexual offenders nor thieves nor the greedy nor drunkards nor slanderers nor swindlers will inherit the kingdom of God. And that is what some of you were. But you were washed, you were sanctified, you were justified in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ and by the Spirit of our God. 1 Corinthians 6:9-11 (NIV)

The Culture’s Reasoning

  • Everything is permissible for me (6:12)
  • Food for the stomach and the stomach for food (6:13)
  • It’s my body; I can do what I want (6:15)

The Spiritual Reality

Do you not know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit, who is in you, whom you have received from God? You are not your own; you were bought at a price. Therefore honor Godwith your body. 1 Corinthians 6:19-20 (NIV)

Chapter 7 — ANY QUESTIONS?

Now for the matters you wrote about… 1 Corinthians 7:1 (NIV)

  1. Is it better to just have nothing to do with sex? (7:1, 7-9)

  2. Is it really my job to sexually satisfy my spouse? (7:3-4)

  3. How often should a Christian couple make love? (7:5)
