Isaiah 24:1-23
24:1-3 | Isaiah paints a picture of devastation during the coming judgment of the entire world, extending to both the physical order and the social order. No one would be exempt from the tragic consequences, affirmed by the statement that the LORD has spoken. All the judgments of the different cities and countries in 13-23 anticipate a day in the future when God will judge the entire earth (24-27; Rev. 19:11-21).
24:5-6 | The everlasting covenant is God’s covenant with Noah, which was then extended to the entire human race (Gen. 9). In this covenant, God charged Noah and his sons to multiply and fill the earth, warned them that murder would be severely punished, and promised that He would never again destroy the earth through a flood.
24:14 | The emphatic they suggests that the songs of praise will be sung by the redeemed remnant of the devastation who escape the judgment. They sing to the Lord in anticipation of their coming deliverance.
24:21-23 | Heavenly and earthly powers will fall. The host of exalted ones refers to spiritual forces opposed to God (Rev. 19:20-20:2). He will also punish all the kings of the earth who oppose Him. Their punishment after many days may refer to the post-millennial Great White Throne Judgment, when all the unrighteous will stand before God and be judged for their evil deeds and lack of faith in Him (Rev. 20:11-15).
