The Gift of Sabbath - Perry Burkholder

Deuteronomy 5:12-15

1. STOP
- In Hebrew shabbat literally translates to: STOP, cease and desist.
- Why is it so difficult for us to STOP work?
- We feel we can’t stop until we have finished everything.
- We’re afraid to stop.

It takes faith to STOP
Embrace your limits and realize that you can’t get everything done, therefore, you have to trust God to take care of you and your concerns

2. REST
- Genesis 1:31
- Genesis 2:2-3
- Mark 2:27

What brings you rest and delight?

When do I take Sabbath?

How do you get the most out of Sabbath?
- Decide what you need to do before hand so you can rest
- Decide what you will do in order to rest
- Choose a time and protect it!

3. REMEMBER
Historically, Sabbath has been a day to worship and remember who God is and what he has done, and who we are are his people.

The very act of proclaiming a day of stopping and ceasing from their work, was not only an act of faith, it was a sign and a witness to themselves and the surrounding culture that they were a free people, liberated by God to honor Him and worship Him and not be controlled by the culture.

Deuteronomy 5:15

When you choose to stop, rest, and remember God…
