THE UPPER ROOM PT 3: THE WAY, TRUTH AND LIFE

John 14:1-6
“Let not your hearts be troubled. Believe in God; believe also in me.

2 In my Father’s house are many rooms. If it were not so, would I have told you that I go to
prepare a place for you?

3 And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again and will take you to myself,
that where I am you may be also.

4 And you know the way to where I am going.”

5 Thomas said to him, “Lord, we do not know where you are going. How can we know the way?”

6 Jesus said to him, “I am the way, and the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father
except through me.

THE WAY – OUR

Jesus does not claim to show the way; He proclaims that He is the way.

Jesus is the only bridge between us and God.

1 Timothy 2:5 – “For there is one God, and there is one mediator between God and men, the man Christ Jesus.”

Jesus did not come merely to teach a better way— He came to be the way.

The Son of God became one of us to enable us to become sons and daughters of God.

THE TRUTH – OUR

Jesus makes a bold, unchanging claim:
“…I am the truth…” – John 14:6

Truth is not merely a concept or a philosophy, truth is a person—and that person is Jesus.

Jesus says He IS The Truth, that means:
Truth is not subjective.
Truth is not circumstantial.
Truth is not optional.

John 1:14 – “And the Word became flesh and dwelt among us, and we have seen his glory, glory as of the only Son from the Father, full of grace and truth.”

When we look at Jesus we see the full revelation of who God is.

Colossians 1:15 – “He is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn of all creation.”

Hebrews 1:3 – “He is the radiance of the glory of God and the exact imprint of his nature.”

John 8:32 – “You will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.”

But Jesus’ truth liberates us from the lies of Satan, the weight of sin, and the fear of death.

THE LIFE – OUR

Jesus provides abundant and eternal life— something no one else can offer.

Jesus offers life in its fullest sense - a life that is not defined by earthly circumstances, but by a deep, abiding relationship with God.

Jesus does not just give life; He is life. He is the source of all that is good, eternal, and
fulfilling.

Jesus didn’t come to make bad people good, He came to make dead people alive!

Ephesians 2:4-5: “But God, being rich in mercy, because of the great love with which he loved
us, even when we were dead in our trespasses, made us alive together with Christ—by grace you have been saved.”

John 10:10 – “I came that they may have life and have it abundantly.”

John 11:25-26 – “I am the resurrection and the life. Whoever believes in me, though he die, yet shall he live, and everyone who lives and believes in me shall never die.”

Life in Jesus is not just abundant—it is eternal.

TABLE TIME:

As we engage in conversation, let Paul’s words to the Colossian church be our framework. Colossians 4:6, ‘Let your speech always be gracious, seasoned with salt, so that you may know how you ought to answer each person.’

How does Jesus’ claim to be ‘the way, the truth, and the life’ challenge cultures understanding of spirituality and religion?

How does Jesus’ statement, “I am the way,” challenge the idea that all religions lead to God?

Why do you think people struggle with the exclusivity of Jesus’ claim to be the only way to God (John 14:6)?

How does understanding Jesus as the only mediator between God and humanity (1 Timothy 2:5) give us confidence in our faith?

What does it mean for Jesus to be “the truth” in a world where people believe truth is subjective?

How does following Jesus as “the truth” help us navigate moral and ethical dilemmas in today’s society?

What are some cultural “half-truths” or lies that contradict Jesus’ teachings, and how can we discern the difference?

John 10:10 - “The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy. I came that they may have
life and have it abundantly.”

Many go through the motions of life, but few experience true fulfillment.
What do you think Jesus meant when He said, “I came that they may have life and have it abundantly.”?

How does the world’s definition of an “abundant life” (fame, wealth, success, comfort) differ from the abundant life Jesus offers?

How has Jesus brought new life to areas of your life that once felt dead or broken?

In what ways have you experienced true abundance in Christ that had nothing to do with personal success, comfort or achievements?

In Luke 9:23-25 it says:
23 And he said to all, “If anyone would come after me, let him deny himself and take up his
cross daily and follow me. 24 For whoever would save his life will lose it, but whoever loses
his life for my sake will save it. 25 For what does it profit a man if he gains the whole
world and loses or forfeits himself?”

How does Jesus’ call to deny ourselves and take up our cross (Luke 9:23) fit into the idea of an abundant life?

If we are fully convinced that Jesus is the way, the truth, and the life, how would it shape the way we communicate the gospel and interact with those who don’t yet believe?
