It Is Finished

“Later, knowing that everything had now been finished, and so that Scripture would be fulfilled, Jesus
said, ‘I am thirsty.’ A bar of wine vinegar was there, so they soaked a sponge in it, put the sponge on a
stalk of the hyssop plant, and lifted it to Jesus’ lips. When he had received the drink, Jesus said, ‘It is
finished.’ With that, he bowed his head and gave up his spirit.” John 19:28-30

“’My food,’ said Jesus ‘is to do the will of him who sent me and to finish his work.’” John 4:34

“Later, knowing that everything had been finished, and so that Scripture would be fulfilled, Jesus said, ‘I
am thirsty.’” John 19:28

1. With the cross, Jesus finished what God had promises

“A jar of wine vinegar was there, so they soaked a sponge in it, put the sponge on a stalk of the hyssop
plant, and lifted it to Jesus’ lips.” John 19:29

“They gave me poison for food, and for my thirst they gave me vinegar to drink.” Psalm 69:21

“Then Moses summoned all the elders of Israel and said to them, ‘Go at once and select the animals for
your families and slaughter the Passover lamb. Take a bunch of hyssop, dip it into the blood in the basin
and put some of the blood on the top and on both sides of the doorframes. None of you shall go out of
the door of your house until morning. When the Lord goes through the land to strike down the
Egyptians, he will see the blood on the top and sides of the doorframes and will pass over that doorway,
and he will not permit the destroyer to enter your houses and strike you down.” Exodus 12:21-23

“’Look, the Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world!’” John 1:29

“Then Jesus said to them, ‘You foolish people! You find it so hard to believe all that the prophets wrote
in the Scriptures. Wasn’t it clearly predicted that the Messiah would have to suffer all these things before
entering his glory?’ Then Jesus took them through the writing of Moses and all the prophets, explaining
from all the Scriptures the things concerning himself…By this time they were nearing Emmaus and the end of their journey.
Jesus acted as if he were going on, but they begged him, ‘Stay the night with us, since it is getting late.’ So he went
home with them. As they sat down to eat, he took the bread and blessed it. Then he broke it and gave
it to them. Suddenly, their eyes were opened, and they recognized him. And at that moment he
disappeared!’” John 24:25-31

2. With the cross, Jesus paid off my sin debt

“You were dead because of your sins and because your sinful nature was not yet cut away. Then God
made you alive with Christ, for he forgave all your sins. He canceled the record of the charges against us
and took it away by nailing it to the cross.” Colossians 2:13-14

“For the wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life through Christ Jesus our Lord.”
Romans 6:23

3. On the cross, Jesus defeated the fear of death, setting you free to live your fullest life now and into eternity

“And I am sure of this, that he who began a good work in you will carry it on to completion.” Philippians
1:6

“I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, and I have remained faithful.” 2 Timothy 4:7

“For me, to live is Christ, and to die is gain.” Philippians 1:21

“Look to Jesus, the founder and perfector of our faith, who for the joy that was set before him endured
the cross, despising the shame, and is seated at the right hand of the throne of God.” Hebrews 12:1-3

“Jesus became flesh and blood by being born in human form. For only as a human being could he die,
and only by dying could he break the power of the Devil, who had the power of death. Only in this way
could he deliver those who have lived all their lives as slaves to the fear of dying.” Hebrews 2:14-15
