“Better is one day in your courts than a thousand elsewhere; I would rather be a doorkeeper in the house of my God than dwell in the tents of the wicked.” —Psalm 84:10 NIV
Psalm 84 is all about longing to be close to God. The psalmist’s deepest desire is not for wealth, success, or comfort—it’s simply to be in the presence of God. He describes how his heart and soul yearn for God, saying, “My heart and my flesh cry out for the living God” (v. 2). This desire isn’t about duty or obligation—it’s about delighting in God’s presence and knowing that being with Him is better than anything else life has to offer.
“Better is one day in your courts than a thousand elsewhere” (v. 10). This verse gets right to the heart of it: One moment in God’s presence outweighs anything the world can give. The psalmist would rather take the most humble role in God’s house than live in luxury apart from Him. This challenges us to think about where we’re placing our time and attention. Are we longing for God, or are we filling our lives with things that leave us empty?
Living in God’s Presence:
Experiencing God’s presence doesn’t require perfection or striving, it requires intention. Just like a family builds strong relationships by spending time together, our relationship with God grows when we carve out time to be with Him. This could look like prayer, worship, reading Scripture, or even sharing life with others in faith. The psalmist reminds us that those who pursue God find joy and strength for the journey: “Blessed are those whose strength is in you, whose hearts are set on pilgrimage” (v. 5).
Make It Practical:
If you find yourself distant from God, the answer isn’t complicated. First, Start small. Make time to meet with Him each day, even if it’s brief. As the psalmist shows, it’s not about grand efforts—it’s about the desire to be near God. When you intentionally spend time with Him, He fills those moments with peace, strength, and joy.
Questions for Reflection:
1. What is one way you can make space for God in your schedule today?
- Are there things you are prioritizing over time with God? How can you shift those priorities?
- How does knowing God’s presence brings joy and strength encourage you in your current season?
Lord, thank You that even one day with You is better than a thousand elsewhere. Help me to set aside distractions and build my life around You. Teach me to find joy in Your presence and strength in knowing You. Lead me today to make space for You, and fill my heart with Your peace and love as I draw near. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
