Devotional Guide for October 28 - November 2, 2024
Message Recap:
In this powerful message, we’re challenged to redefine greatness through the lens of Christ. The world often equates greatness with power and status, but Jesus flips this notion on its head. We explore Philippians 2, where Paul urges us to have the same mindset as Christ - one of humility, servanthood, and obedience. This ‘greatness mindset’ is others-focused, propelling the gospel forward through our actions. We’re reminded of Jesus washing His disciples’ feet, a profound act of servitude that exemplifies true greatness. As we reflect on this, we’re called to examine our own lives. Are we sitting and getting, or serving and giving? The message encourages us to take practical steps towards developing this Christ-like mindset, whether it’s through daily spiritual disciplines or actively serving those around us. It’s a compelling call to align our thoughts and actions with Jesus, transforming our understanding of greatness and our approach to life and faith.
Devotional Guide:
Day 1: The Mindset of Christ — Philippians 2:1-11
As we begin this journey, let’s reflect on the mindset of Christ. Paul urges us to have the same attitude as Jesus - one of humility, servanthood, and selflessness. In a world that often promotes self-interest, Christ’s example stands in stark contrast. How can we cultivate this mindset in our daily lives?
Consider areas where you might be tempted to put yourself first. Ask God to help you see opportunities to serve others and put their interests above your own. Remember, true greatness in God’s kingdom is measured by our willingness to serve, not by worldly standards of success.
Day 2: Serving Others — Mark 10:35-45
Jesus redefines greatness for His followers. It’s not about power or position, but about service and sacrifice. Reflect on Jesus’ words: “Whoever wants to be great among you must be your servant.” How does this challenge your own ambitions and desires?
Think about ways you can serve those around you today - perhaps a family member, a coworker, or a neighbor. As you serve, remember that you’re following in the footsteps of Christ, who came “not to be served, but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many.” Let this be your motivation and your source of joy in serving others.
Day 3: Overcoming Temptation — Matthew 4:1-11
Jesus’ temptation in the wilderness reveals the importance of relying on God’s word and staying focused on His will. Like Jesus, we face temptations to make life about ourselves, to take shortcuts, or to seek power and recognition. How can we follow Jesus’ example in resisting these temptations? Meditate on the scriptures Jesus used to counter the devil’s offers.
Consider memorizing a verse that speaks to an area where you often struggle. Remember, Jesus understands our temptations and offers us the strength to overcome them. When faced with choices today, ask yourself: “What would Jesus do?”
Day 4: The Power of Humility - John 13:1-17
The image of Jesus washing His disciples’ feet is a powerful demonstration of true humility and servant leadership. In this act, Jesus turns the world’s understanding of greatness upside down. Reflect on times when you’ve been reluctant to serve in seemingly lowly ways. What holds you back? Pride? Fear of what others might think? Jesus, knowing His identity and authority, willingly took on the role of a servant. How might embracing your identity in Christ free you to serve others more fully?
Look for an opportunity today to serve someone in a way that requires humility. As you do, remember Jesus’ words: “Now that you know these things, you will be blessed if you do them.”
Day 5: Working Out Your Salvation — Philippians 2:12-13
Paul encourages us to “work out your salvation with fear and trembling.” This isn’t about earning salvation, but about living out our faith with reverence and awe. It’s a call to action - to put into practice the mindset of Christ we’ve been exploring this week. But notice the beautiful promise that follows: “for it is God who works in you.” As you seek to live out your faith, remember that God is at work within you.
What areas of your life need to be more aligned with Christ’s example? Ask God to work in those areas, transforming your thoughts and actions. Trust that as you step out in obedience, God will empower you to live a life that reflects His greatness.
