Series: Romans – Grasping The Gospel
Sermon Title: Part 15 – The Free Gift of God
Scripture: Romans 5:12-21
Speaker: Pastor Mark Pospisil

Questions:

  1. Would you say you are more of a “There’s no such thing as a free lunch” type of person, or more of a “If it’s free, it’s for me” type? Why?

  2. Why do you think a lot of people are skeptical about something that is “free?”

  3. Why do you think that in Romans 5:15-17, the phrase “free gift” is used? Isn’t a gift free by definition? Why do you think that this redundancy is used (Hint: it is not simply poor grammar; there is a reason!)

  4. Romans 5:12 states that since sin came into the world through one man, death also came into the world along with sin. Therefore, since all have sinned as it says in this verse, what is the end result for all people? Why do you think this is so important to understand?

  5. Read Romans 5:14. What was the transgression committed by Adam? Has anyone ever sinned by doing the exact same transgression as Adam? If that is the case, then why would death still reign from the time of Adam to the time of Moses? How does Romans 3:23 and Romans 6:23 help to answer that question?

  6. In Romans 5:15, Paul contrasts the “free gift” with the “trespass.” He states that through the “trespass” of one man, many died. Yet with the “free gift,” however, the grace of God abounded for many by the grace of another man (Jesus).

  7. When you realize that this “free gift” is “free” because Someone else paid for it with His own life, how does this change the way you look at this free gift? How does this change the way you think and feel about the One who paid for this gift to make it free for you?

  8. Reading Romans 5:21, the new situation is that grace now reigns through Jesus Christ. What do you need to do so that this grace reigns in you and through you as you live out each day?
