
Sermon Title: Forgiving as we’ve been forgiven
Scripture: Luke 7:36-50
I. The goal of forgiveness is to be like Jesus and to be with Jesus
II. What forgiveness is not.
1. Forgiveness is not forgetfulness
2. Forgiveness is not a feeling.
3. Forgiveness does not mean allowing something destructive or toxic back into your life.
4. Forgiveness is not a one-time event.
III. What forgiveness is.
“We must develop and maintain the capacity to forgive. He who is devoid of the power to forgive is devoid of the power to love,” Martin Luther King Jr.
“Forgiveness is above all a personal choice, a decision of the heart to go against natural instinct to pay back evil with evil.” - Pope John Paul II
“It is the personal act to release the one who sinned against me from my personal right to collect on the moral debt; to pay him or her back for his or her offense. - Dr. Gerry Breshears
1. Forgiveness is returning the right to God to take care of justice. (Romans 12:19)
2. Forgiveness means we’ll determine to do good rather than what is evil. (Romans 12:20-21)
3. Forgiveness is an unmerited gift.(Hebrews 12:14)
