Into the Deep - Humility 101: How to Be Awesome Without Even Knowing It

Culture: The behaviors, beliefs, and values of a particular society, group, tribe, or organization.

What should a godly culture look like within the church community?

Humility

Don’t be selfish; don’t try to impress others. Be humble, thinking of others as better than yourselves. Don’t look out only for your own interests, but take an interest in others, too. You must have the same attitude that Christ Jesus had. Though he was God, he did not think of equality with God as something to cling to. Instead, he gave up his divine privileges; he took the humble position of a slave and was born as a human being. When he appeared in human form, he humbled himself in obedience to God and died a criminal’s death on a cross. Therefore, God elevated him to the place of highest honor and gave him the name above all other names, that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, in heaven and on earth and under the earth, and every tongue declare that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father. —Philippians 2:3-11

Jesus said to the people who believed in him, “You are truly my disciples if you remain faithful to my teachings.” —John 8:31

Humble Bragging

Insecurity

But whatever I am now, it is all because God poured out his special favor on me—and not without results. For I have worked harder than any of the other apostles; yet it was not I but God who was working through me by his grace. —I Corinthians 15:10

Being Unopinionated

Humility is not thinking less of yourself, it’s thinking of yourself less. —C.S. Lewis

Humility is total dependence on God’s mercy.

Then Jesus told this story to some who had great confidence in their own righteousness and scorned everyone else: “Two men went to the Temple to pray. One was a Pharisee, and the other was a despised tax collector. The Pharisee stood by himself and prayed this prayer: ‘I thank you, God, that I am not like other people—cheaters, sinners, adulterers. I’m certainly not like that tax collector! I fast twice a week, and I give you a tenth of my income.’ “But the tax collector stood at a distance and dared not even lift his eyes to heaven as he prayed. Instead, he beat his chest in sorrow, saying, ‘O God, be merciful to me, for I am a sinner.’ I tell you, this sinner, not the Pharisee, returned home justified before God. For those who exalt themselves will be humbled, and those who humble themselves will be exalted.” —Luke 18:9-14

Humility has no interest in power, popularity, or position.

“Whoever wants to be first must take last place and be the servant of everyone else.” Then he put a little child among them. Taking the child in his arms, he said to them, “Anyone who welcomes a little child like this on my behalf welcomes me, and anyone who welcomes me welcomes not only me but also my Father who sent me.” —Mark 9:35-37

An attitude of humility thinks about serving, not of being served. It thinks about giving rather than taking. It thinks about responding rather than commanding. It thinks about fitting into the arrangement of others, not demanding that they fit into ours. —Alistair Begg

When you give to someone in need, don’t do as the hypocrites do—blowing trumpets in the synagogues and streets to call attention to their acts of charity! I tell you the truth, they have received all the reward they will ever get. But when you give to someone in need, don’t let your left hand know what your right hand is doing. Give your gifts in private, and your Father, who sees everything, will reward you. —Matthew 6:2-4

Humility is total obedience to God’s Word.

I will bless those who have humble and contrite hearts, who tremble at my word. —Isaiah 66:2

Humility desires to learn from humble people.

Walk with the wise and become wise; associate with fools and get in trouble. —Proverbs 13:20
