Reason #1: This criminal
One of the criminals hanging beside Him scoffed, “So You’re the Messiah, are You? Prove it by saving Yourself—and us, too, while You’re at it!” But the other criminal protested, “Don’t you fear God even when you have been sentenced to die?”
Luke 23:39 – 40
Fear of the Lord is the foundation of true wisdom. All who obey His commandments will grow in wisdom.
Psalm 111:10
As we live in God, our love grows more perfect. So we will not be afraid on the day of judgment, but we can face Him with confidence because we live like Jesus here in this world. Such love has no fear, because perfect love expels all fear. If we are afraid, it is for fear of punishment, and this shows that we have not fully experienced His perfect love.
1 John 4:17 – 18
Their talk is foul, like the stench from an open grave. Their tongues are filled with lies. Snake venom drips from their lips. Their mouths are full of cursing and bitterness. They rush to commit murder. Destruction and misery always follow them. They don’t know where to find peace. They have no fear of God at all.
Romans 3:13 – 18
“Are they ashamed of their disgusting actions? Not at all—they don’t even know how to blush! Therefore, they will lie among the slaughtered. They will be brought down when I punish them,” says the Lord.
Jeremiah 6:15
He will give eternal life to those who keep on doing good, seeking after the glory and honor and immortality that God offers. But He will pour out His anger and wrath on those who live for themselves, who refuse to obey the truth and instead live lives of wickedness.
Romans 2:7 – 8
It is a terrible thing to fall into the hands of the living God.
Hebrews 10:31
Reason #2: This criminal
Two others, both criminals, were led out to be executed with Him. When they came to a place called The Skull, they nailed Him to the cross. And the criminals were also crucified—one on His right and one on His left.
Luke 23:32 – 33
As they led Jesus away, a man named Simon, who was from Cyrene, happened to be coming in from the countryside. The soldiers seized him and put the cross on him and made him carry it behind Jesus. A large crowd trailed behind, including many grief-stricken women. But Jesus turned and said to them, “Daughters of Jerusalem, don’t weep for Me, but weep for yourselves and for your children.”
Luke 23:26 - 28
“No one can take My life from Me. I sacrifice it voluntarily.”
Jesus in John 10:18
“Father, forgive them, for they don’t know what they are doing.”
Jesus in Luke 23:34
The crowd watched and the leaders scoffed. “He saved others,” they said, “let Him save Himself if He is really God’s Messiah, the Chosen One.”
Luke 23:35
He did not retaliate when He was insulted, nor threaten revenge when He suffered.
1 Peter 2:23
Reason #3: This criminal
“We deserve to die for our crimes, but this man hasn’t done anything wrong.”
Luke 23:41
Reason #4: This criminal
Then he said, “Jesus, remember me when You come into Your Kingdom.” And Jesus replied, “I assure you, today you will be with Me in paradise.”
Luke 23:42 - 43
God saved you by His grace when you believed. And you can’t take credit for this; it is a gift from God. Salvation is not a reward for the good things we have done, so none of us can boast about it.
