Check-In (Highs & Lows) 15 min
A great, quick way to catch the highlights of what is happening in the lives of the people in your group is to take turns quickly sharing the “highs & lows” of your week. High: What was your biggest highlight since we last met? Low: What was the low point during this time?

Settle-In (Ice-Breaker) 10 min
What is something you have been told you are really great at doing?

Dig-In (Scripture) 35 min
1. Read Mark 10:35-41. The historical context here reminds us that the only way John and James understood how to acquire power was to take it, be “in” with the right people, or use others. How does this help us understand their ask?

2. How does this story of John and James asking for positions of power illustrate the human desire for greatness? What was Jesus’ response to this ask?

3. Read Mark 10:42-45. What must someone do in order to become “great”? What example does Jesus set for the disciples as seen in these verses?

4. Jesus teaches that greatness in the kingdom of God is defined by serving others. How is this idea different from the world’s perspective on greatness?

5. Can you think of any people or examples in your life that demonstrate this concept of “kingdom greatness”? Who, and how?

6. John’s writings, especially his emphasis on truth and love, showcase the impact of the gospel on his life. How has your own encounter with the gospel influenced your life?

7. What areas of your life do you feel need transformation in order to better serve others and love more fully?

Gear-Up (Application) 15 min
1. Have someone in the group read the following:

Right here we must see the difference between choosing to serve and choosing to be a servant. When we choose to serve, we are still in charge. We decide whom we will serve and when we will serve. And if we are in charge, we will worry a great deal about anyone stepping on us, that is, taking charge over us. But when we choose to be a servant, we give up the right to be in charge. There is great freedom in this. If we voluntarily choose to be taken advantage of, then we cannot be manipulated. When we choose to be a servant, we surrender the right to decide who and when we will serve. We become available and vulnerable. —Richard Foster, Celebration of Discipline

At this time in your life, are you choosing to serve or are you choosing to be a servant? What does this look like?

2.If you are choosing to serve, what would it look like to take steps towards choosing to be a servant?

Step-Up (Homework)
ONE MORE check in!
1. Who did you have in mind, or who did you write down as your ONE MORE? Have you been able to have a spiritual conversation with them, or invite them to church with you since you identified them as your ONE MORE? How can you commit to taking a step towards reaching out to your ONE MORE this week?

2. For those of you that stepped into your ONE MORE challenge last week, how did it go?

3. Be in prayer this week about how can multiple his presence in you and through you as you consider what steps you need to take to become a servant?
