Battle Ready: Ready to Fight

Put on salvation as your helmet, and take the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God. —Ephesians 6:17

Salvation is not just a past-tense event with future-tense implications. As we live underneath its blessing, we enjoy a vibrant, living, daily reality in the present. And this is not just a one-time occurrence. Receiving salvation is not the same as applying salvation. The first, redeems us; the second restores, protects, and shields us daily from the attacks of the enemy. —Priscilla Shirer

But let us who live in the light be clearheaded, protected by the armor of faith and love, and wearing as our helmet the confidence of our salvation. —1 Thessalonians 5:8

Big Idea: Our salvation, combined with the Word of God, provides confidence in the face of the enemy.

Big Question: What can we be confident of in our salvation?
Main Scripture: Matthew 3:16-4:11

After his baptism, as Jesus came up out of the water, the heavens were opened and he saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove and settling on him. 17 And a voice from heaven said, “This is my dearly loved Son, who brings me great joy.” —Matthew 3:16-17

What can we be confident of in our salvation?
1. Confidence in who and Whose I am

Your identity is your weaponry. Putting on the helmet of your salvation is akin to knowing who you are in Christ, fortifying your thinking with it, and living in a way that is congruent with it. When you do this, you break the enemy’s stronghold and also tap into the power to deflect future attacks. —Priscilla Shirer

I am who God says I am. He calls me by name; I am His. (Isaiah 43:1-2)

I am Yours God, for I belong to You. God bought me with the highest price. He knows me by name. I am His and He overcomes all my fear. (1 Corinthians 6:19-20, Isaiah 43:1-2)

By faith, I am a co-heir with Jesus, adopted into the family of God; a loved and accepted son of the Father. I am the righteousness of God in Christ Jesus, and I have resurrection power flowing through my veins from the Holy Spirit. (Romans 8:12-17)

I am a beloved child and called servant of the Most High God; there is no person, circumstance, or voice who is able to rob me of who I am in Jesus. I am who God says I am. (Romans 8:35-39)

What can we be confident of in our salvation?
1. Confidence in who and Whose I am
2. Confidence in what I have

Then Jesus was led by the Spirit into the wilderness to be tempted there by the devil. 2 For forty days and forty nights he fasted and became very hungry. 3 During that time the devil came and said to him, “If you are the Son of God, tell these stones to become loaves of bread.” 4 But Jesus told him, “No! The Scriptures say, ‘People do not live by bread alone, but by every word that comes from the mouth of God.’” —Matthew 4:1-4

All praise to God, the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who has blessed us with every spiritual blessing in the heavenly realms because we are united with Christ. —Ephesians 1:3

I already have the blessing, favor, abundance, protection, provision, love, mercy, grace, acceptance, forgiveness, and presence of Jesus; I live in it and live from it. I don’t deserve it and I can’t earn it, but God gives it to me anyway. Every spiritual blessing is mine in Christ Jesus.

What can we be confident of in our salvation?

2. Confidence in what I have
3. Confidence in what I should do

Then the devil took him to the holy city, Jerusalem, to the highest point of the Temple, 6 and said, “If you are the Son of God, jump off! For the Scriptures say, ‘He will order his angels to protect you. And they will hold you up with their hands so you won’t even hurt your foot on a stone.’” 7 Jesus responded, “The Scriptures also say, ‘You must not test the Lord your God.’” 8 Next the devil took him to the peak of a very high mountain and showed him all the kingdoms of the world and their glory. 9 “I will give it all to you,” he said, “if you will kneel down and worship me.” 10Get out of here, Satan,” Jesus told him. “For the Scriptures say, ‘You must worship the Lord your God and serve only him.’” 11 Then the devil went away, and angels came and took care of Jesus. —Matthew 4:5-11

For the word of God is alive and powerful. It is sharper than the sharpest two-edged sword, cutting between soul and spirit, between joint and marrow. It exposes our innermost thoughts and desires. —Hebrews 4:12

All Scripture is inspired by God and is useful to teach us what is true and to make us realize what is wrong in our lives. It corrects us when we are wrong and teaches us to do what is right. —2 Timothy 3:16

A single text of Scripture is better to meet a temptation, than all the philosophy which the world contains. The tempter can reason, but he cannot resist a direct and positive command of the Almighty. —Albert Barnes

“Get out of here, Satan,” Jesus told him. “For the Scriptures say, ‘You must worship the LORD your God and serve only him.’” —Matthew 4:10
