For all the promises of God in Him are Yes, and in Him Amen, to the glory of God through us. —2 Corinthians 1:20

Then He said to them, “Thus it is written, and thus it was necessary for the Christ to suffer and to rise from the dead the third day, 47 and that repentance and remission of sins should be preached in His name to all nations, beginning at Jerusalem. 48 And you are witnesses of these things. 49 Behold, I send the Promise of My Father upon you; but tarry in the city of Jerusalem until you are endued with power from on high.” —Luke 24:46-49
Listen carefully: I am sending the Promise of My Father [the Holy Spirit] upon you; but you are to remain in the city [of Jerusalem] until you are clothed (fully equipped) with power from on high.” —Luke 24:49 - AMP

1. The Day of Pentecost was when the Promise of the Father was
given.
And being assembled together with them, He commanded them not to depart from Jerusalem, but to wait for the Promise of the Father, “which,” He said, “you have heard from Me; 5 for John truly baptized with water, but you shall be baptized with the Holy Spirit not many days from now.” —Acts 1:4-5
- Here Jesus directly states that the Promise of the Father is the
But you shall receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you; and you shall be witnesses to Me in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the end of the earth.” —Acts 1:8
Then they returned to Jerusalem from the mount called Olivet, which is near Jerusalem, a Sabbath day’s journey. 13 And when they had entered, they went up into the upper room where they were staying: Peter, James, John, and Andrew; Philip and Thomas; Bartholomew and Matthew; James the son of Alphaeus and Simon the Zealot; and Judas the son of James. 14 These all continued with one accord in prayer and supplication, with the women and Mary the mother of Jesus, and with His brothers. —Acts 1:12-14
- They didn’t know this gift would be received on the Day of Pentecost, but they waited in
When the Day of Pentecost had fully come, they were all with one accord in one place. 2 And suddenly there came a sound from heaven, as of a rushing mighty wind, and it filled the whole house where they were sitting. 3 Then there appeared to them divided tongues, as of fire, and one sat upon each of them. 4 And they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak with other tongues, as the Spirit gave them utterance. —Acts 2:1-4
But this is what was spoken by the prophet Joel:
> 17 ‘And it shall come to pass in the last days, says God,
That I will pour out of My Spirit on all flesh;
Your sons and your daughters shall prophesy,
Your young men shall see visions,
Your old men shall dream dreams.
18 And on My menservants and on My maidservants
I will pour out My Spirit in those days;
And they shall prophesy. —Acts 2:16-18Therefore being exalted to the right hand of God, and having received from the Father the promise of the Holy Spirit, He [Jesus] poured out this which you now see and hear. —Acts 2:33
- Jesus received the promise when He ascended, and then poured out the Spirit! He is the
2. There are two
experiences with the Holy Spirit.
- John the Baptist introduced Jesus as both
36 “Therefore let all the house of Israel know assuredly that God has made this Jesus, whom you crucified, both Lord and Christ.”
37 Now when they heard this, they were cut to the heart, and said to Peter and the rest of the apostles, “Men and brethren, what shall we do?”
38 Then Peter said to them, “Repent, and let every one of you be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins; and you shall receive the gift of the Holy Spirit. 39 For the promise is to you and to your children, and to all who are afar off, as many as the Lord our God will call.” —Acts 2:36-29
Here Peter talks about
- Baptism in the of Jesus Christ, or water baptism, that corresponds with the gift of salvation.
- Baptism in the Holy Spirit, the gift of the Holy Spirit.
3. The Promise of the Father for
. We are in the church age, the age of the Holy Spirit!
- When you put your faith in Jesus, the Holy Sprit comes to dwell
- When you receive the baptism of the Holy Spirit, the Holy Spirit comes
16 And I will pray the Father, and He will give you another Helper, that He may abide with you forever— 17 the Spirit of truth, whom the world cannot receive, because it neither sees Him nor knows Him; but you know Him, for He dwells with you and will be in you. —John 14:16-18
- The Holy Spirit will help you.
- The Holy Spirit will always be with you and never leave you.
- He dwells with you, and will be in you. (born again).
- Then in Acts 1:4-8, Jesus says you will be immersed in the Spirit and He will come upon you.
And with many other words he testified and exhorted them, saying, “Be saved from this perverse generation.” 41 Then those who gladly received his word were baptized; and that day about three thousand souls were added to them. 42 And they continued steadfastly in the apostles’ doctrine and fellowship, in the breaking of bread, and in prayers. —Acts 2:40-42
The Promise Received
- This is the promise of the Father to each of us!
- Normal Christianity is Spirit-filled Christianity.
- This promise was initially given on the Day of Pentecost, but
- The promise is for all people, and it is also
Lift up your heads, O you gates!
And be lifted up, you everlasting doors!
And the King of glory shall come in. —Psalm 24:7
Acts 10:44-48If you, then, being evil [that is, sinful by nature], know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your heavenly Father give the Holy Spirit to those who ask and continue to ask Him!” —Luke 11:13
