God-Breathed Living

Day 187: A Heart Fully Committed

Today’s Reading:
2 Kings 13–15, Psalm 7, Proverbs 5, 2 Corinthians 8

Today’s Scripture: 2 Kings 14:3 (NLT)

“Amaziah did what was pleasing in the Lord’s sight, but not like his ancestor David. Instead, he followed the example of his father, Joash. Amaziah did not destroy the pagan shrines, and the people still offered sacrifices and burned incense there.”

Devotional:

Amaziah’s story hits close to home. He wanted to follow God—but only so far.

2 Kings 14 says he “did what was pleasing in the Lord’s sight,” but he didn’t take it all the way. He left the high places standing. He let pockets of compromise remain in the nation and in his own life.

It’s easy to read his story and think, Why didn’t he just tear them down? But the truth is, many of us do the same. We obey God in the big, obvious areas… but leave certain habits, relationships, or attitudes untouched because tearing them down feels costly or inconvenient.

God wants all of us. He’s not after partial surrender. Leaving high places standing might seem harmless—but over time, they grow into strongholds that pull us away from wholehearted devotion.

Today, God’s asking: Is there any “high place” in your life I’m asking you to tear down? Don’t stop short of full obedience. Freedom waits on the other side.

Reflection Questions:

  1. Are there “high places” in your life that you’ve left standing?

  2. What would it look like to give God your whole heart today?

Prayer:

Father, search my heart and reveal any areas I’ve held back from You. I don’t want partial obedience—I want full surrender. Tear down anything in me that competes for Your place. Help me live with a heart fully committed to You. In Jesus’ name, amen.

Digging Deeper:

In 2 Kings 13–15, kings come and go, some doing what was right in God’s eyes—but few wholeheartedly. They often left the high places untouched, allowing divided worship to persist.

Psalm 7 highlights David’s confidence in God’s justice, showing that even in trials, a fully devoted heart seeks refuge in the Lord. Proverbs 5 urges wisdom to avoid paths of seduction and destruction, reminding us that unchecked desires can lead to ruin.

2 Corinthians 8 is a powerful example of surrendered hearts. Despite financial hardship, the Macedonian believers gave generously, demonstrating that devotion to God often overflows into practical, sacrificial love.

These readings together remind us that God wants undivided loyalty. Partial obedience leaves doors open for future compromise—but full devotion leads to freedom, integrity, and lasting impact.
