Ephesians 4:17-32

God’s Design for Relationships

Leave your

life behind (verses 17-19)

With the Lord’s authority I say this: Live no longer as the Gentiles do, for they are hopelessly confused. Their minds are full of darkness; they wander far from the life God gives because they have closed their minds and hardened their hearts against him. They have no sense of shame. They live for lustful pleasure and eagerly practice every kind of impurity. (Ephesians 4:17-19, NLT)

Primary sign of your old life is that your were all messed up

Sow a thought, reap an action.
Sow an action, reap a habit.
Sow a habit, reap a character.
Sow a character, reap an eternity

Put on your life (verses 20-24)

living like you did before you followed Jesus, let the repair your mind, and walking in Jesus’s truth every day

The world is trying to influence us to be , but Christ is trying to influence us to be

Let Jesus’ truth become truth
• Read God’s Word on your own (it’s all re Jesus!)
• Read God’s Word with others in a group

Your thoughts your life

Here’s what the new life looks like (verses 25-32)

Don’t tell lies—tell the truth

So stop telling lies. Let us tell our neighbors the truth, for we are all parts of the same body. (Ephesians 4:25, NLT)

“If you tell the truth, you don’t have to remember .” (Mark Twain)

Don’t explode in anger—make quickly

And “don’t sin by letting anger control you.” Don’t let the sun go down while you are still angry, for anger gives a foothold to the devil. (Ephesians 4:26-27, NLT)

Most anger comes from fear, frustration, or

We must put a on our anger to keep it from becoming sinful: do all you can to reconcile before nightfall

Don’t steal—work, so you can be

If you are a thief, quit stealing. Instead, use your hands for good hard work, and then give generously to others in need. (Ephesians 4:28, NLT)

Don’t use words to —use words to

Don’t use foul or abusive language. Let everything you say be good and helpful, so that your words will be an encouragement to those who hear them. And do not bring sorrow to God’s Holy Spirit by the way you live. Remember, he has identified you as his own, guaranteeing that you will be saved on the day of redemption. (Ephesians 4:29-30, NLT)

We can use words in two ways: to hurt or to help … to up or down … constructively or destructively

Some people make cutting remarks, but the words of the wise bring healing. (Proverbs 12:18, NLT)

When we use cutting words, we hurt not just the other person, but the

too

Don’t use foul or abusive language. Let everything you say be good and helpful, so that your words will be an encouragement to those who hear them. (Ephesians 4:29, NLT)

Don’t indulge hatred—choose to

Get rid of all bitterness, rage, anger, harsh words, and slander, as well as all types of evil behavior. Instead, be kind to each other, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, just as God through Christ has forgiven you. (Ephesians 4:31-32, NLT)

What forgiveness is not:
-
-
- with kindness
- Ignoring
- – Forgiveness is given, trust is

What forgiveness is:
“Heart forgiveness includes identifying with the wrongdoer, inwardly paying the debt, and then willing good for the wrongdoer.” (Tim Keller, Forgive)
