Zechariah 12:1-13

12:1-9 | In that day speaks of the consummation of God’s great program for His people Israel. The reference is to the eschatological Day of the Lord. Just as God created the heavens and the earth and breathed the spirit of life into man, He will fulfill all His promises regarding the future deliverance of His chosen people, Israel (Isa. 44:24; Rom. 11:26-27).

12:3 | A very heavy stone is literally a “stone of burden.” Just as lifting something too heavy causes internal injuries within the human body, any nation that tried to gain victory over Jerusalem would grievously injure itself. The proud Gentile nations would be unable to subdue Israel (Hag. 2:22).

12:8-9 | Although the nation of Israel is one of the smallest countries on earth (feeble among them), its enormous impact on the unfolding of history will continue into the latter days, where it will be at the center of world events.

12:10-14 | Zechariah prophesies a change in Israel’s attitude toward the Lord. They had rejected Him in the past, but in the future they would come to their senses and lament what they had done.

12:10 | In the original context here, the Lord Himself is the one who is pierced. Israel’s rejection of God eventually took the form of rejecting God’s Son, symbolized by the Roman soldier’s spear thrust in Jesus’ side as He hung on the cross (John 19:37).
