Blessed Are Those Who Mourn
Matthew 5:4
4 Blessed are they that mourn: for they shall be comforted.
Transparency in leadership is the foundation of a healthy, thriving community.
Acting too holy to be hurt = breeding CHAOS, CONFUSION, DIVISION AND FEAR.
Leaders who REFUSE TO MOURN are architects of their own downfall.
Ecclesiastes 3:1 – 8
1 To every thing there is a season, and a time to every purpose under the heaven:
2 A time to be born, and a time to die; a time to plant, and a time to pluck up that which is planted;
3 A time to kill, and a time to heal; a time to break down, and a time to build up;
4 A time to weep, and a time to laugh; a time to mourn, and a time to dance;
5 A time to cast away stones, and a time to gather stones together; a time to embrace, and a time to refrain from embracing;
6 A time to get, and a time to lose; a time to keep, and a time to cast away;
7 A time to rend, and a time to sew; a time to keep silence, and a time to speak;
8 A time to love, and a time to hate; a time of war, and a time of peace.
WHAT DO WE MOURN?
- DEATH
- DISAPOINTMENTS
- ENDS OF THINGS (friendships, moving, job changes, etc.)
- OUR MISTAKES AND MISGIVINGS
- WE MOURN SOME MOMENTS OF NOT LISTENING TO THE HOLY GHOST
WHAT IS MOURNING?
- Mourning is how you display it outside.
Psalm 30:5
5 For his anger endureth but a moment; in his favour is life: weeping may endure for a night, but joy cometh in the morning.
Weeping in the night gives us access to joy in the morning.
1ST - MOURNING IS A PART OF
Grief is the depth of issues and emotions inside of us…
Mourning is when we ARE -
- VOCAL
- TRANSPARENT
- EXPRESSIVE
while allowing others to see and feel and connect with us.
Mourning is a part of living with a soul in this world.
WE DO NOT GRIEVE LIKE HEATHENS DO… we mourn.
I Thessalonians 4:13
13 But I would not have you to be ignorant, brethren, concerning them which are asleep, that ye sorrow not, even as others which have no hope.
v. 18 Wherefore comfort one another with these words.
- GRIEF COMES WITH
- MOURNING COMES WITH
2ND - YOU CANNOT MOURN WELL WITHOUT
Mourning is one of the toughest seasons we can face in our lives…
Romans 12:15
15 Rejoice with them that do rejoice, and weep with them that weep.
Do not judge someone elses MOURNING.
3RD -
Ruth 2:3
3 And Ruth the Moabite said to Naomi, “Let me go to the fields and pick up the leftover grain behind anyone in whose eyes I find favor”.
Gleaning is for three categories of people…
- the poor
- the widows
- the foreigner
One of the best ways to get out of grieving and into morning so that we can receive God‘s blessing is being willing to glean.
Gleaning =
- Searching - It means that you notice what was left that no one else possibly noticed…
- Getting what no one else noticed
- When we see the goodness of God in a moment of grief, and although we mourn in a moment, we can also receive his blessing…
- We can mourn and still be full of gratitude…
- We can mourn, and still be blessed

Luke 7:11 - 15
11 And it came to pass the day after, that he went into a city called Nain; and many of his disciples went with him, and much people.
12 Now when he came nigh to the gate of the city, behold, there was a dead man carried out, the only son of his mother, and she was a widow: and much people of the city was with her.
13 And when the Lord saw her, he had compassion on her, and said unto her, Weep not.
14 And he came and touched the bier: and they that bare him stood still. And he said, Young man, I say unto thee, Arise.
15 And he that was dead sat up, and began to speak. And he delivered him to his mother.
- Step 1: SHOCK and DENIAL
- Step 2: PAIN and COMPASSION
- Step 3: ANGER and BARGAINING - Hers was a weeping of “why not me?”
- Step 4: DEPRESSION, REFLECTION, LONELINESS

3 To appoint unto them that mourn in Zion, to give unto them beauty for ashes, the oil of joy for mourning, the garment of praise for the spirit of heaviness; that they might be called trees of righteousness, the planting of the Lord, that he might be glorified.
Appoint = assigned a position of leadership and responsibility.
Zion = literally a “parched place”
AS LEADERS, WE ARE CALLED TO SEE THE AREAS AROUND US THAT ARE VOID OF THE ANOINTING…
- the water
- the oil
WE MOURN with those who mourn… but we also help them out of what is not working.
- When you see someone mourning - you need to realize GOD APPOINTED ME FOR THIS!
- Sometimes the “night” is longer than 8 hours; it is the dark season of the soul.
In these night seasons it is important to remember that God is bigger than our pain.
