ME BE HOLY? 1 Pet. 1:13-16
The Call to
vs.16
The
: God is calling out a people for His name. A people to reflect and reveal His glory to the world. A people who were not a people. Remember the parallels between God’s calling of the nation Israel and that of the church. We see it right away in the opening verses, “strangers, elect, sprinkling of blood, inheritance.” Being delivered by the blood of the Lamb of God (18-19) purified (22), as on the Passover night, while they feasted on the lamb, they were to have their loins girt, prepared to travel, prepared to fight, prepared to be brought into the promised land. Clean- Levitical priest.
Exodus 19:6 And ye shall be unto me a kingdom of priests, and an
nation. These are the words which thou shalt speak unto the children of Israel.
Leviticus 11:45 For I am the LORD that bringeth you up out of the land of Egypt, to be your God: ye shall therefore be holy, for I am holy.
Called by God, enabled by God to take on the family likeness. Holiness is not a
. Holiness here is not about actions as much as it is about attitude. What does it mean to be holy? It means to. “…love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind, and with all thy strength: this is the first commandment. And the second is like, namely this, Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself. Mark 12:30-31
The Pharisees believed that holy
made them holy. That which they did and did not do. They had the activity down pat, but they weren’t holy. Holy actions will flow from holy
, but holy actions are impossible without the inner spirit. Set apart “not fashioning”
The
for holiness- 1 Peter 2:9-12 But ye are a chosen generation, a royal priesthood, an holy nation, a peculiar people; that ye should shew forth the praises of him who hath called you out of darkness into his marvellous light: Which in time past were not a people, but are now the people of God: which had not obtained mercy, but now have obtained mercy. Dearly beloved, I beseech you as strangers and pilgrims, abstain from fleshly lusts, which war against the soul; Having your conversation honest among the Gentiles: that, whereas they speak against you as evildoers, they may by your good works, which they shall behold, glorify God in the day of visitation.
What did God give under the Old Covenant to ensure and encourage holiness?
The
- “As obedient children, not fashioning yourselves according to the former lusts in your ignorance: but as which hath called you is holy, so be ye holy in all manner of conversation; because it is written, Be ye holy; for I am holy.”
The
- Holiness is individual, but holiness is also corporate.
