LEAD LIKE JESUS – The HABITS of a Leader
Now when Daniel learned that the decree had been published, he went home to his upstairs room where the windows opened toward Jerusalem. Three times a day he got down on his knees and prayed, giving thanks to his God, just as he had done before. —Daniel 6:10 (NIV)
Habits are the tools we use to become the people we want to be. The things you do consistently, not occasionally, will be what sets the trajectory for your future.
Habit #1 - Exceptional leaders continually MODEL HUMILITY.
Pride leads to disgrace, but with humility comes wisdom. —Proverbs 11:2 (NLT)
In your relationships with one another, have the same mindset as Christ Jesus: Who, being in very nature God, did not consider equality with God something to be used to his own advantage; rather, he made himself nothing by taking the very nature of a servant, being made in human likeness. And being found in appearance as a man, he humbled himself by becoming obedient to death— even death on a cross! —Philippians 2:5-8 (NIV)
Do nothing out of selfish ambition or vain conceit. Rather, in humility value others above yourselves, not looking to your own interests but each of you to the interests of the others. —Philippians 2:3-4 (NIV)
Habit #2 - Exceptional leaders learn how to HANDLE CRITICISM.
Very early in the morning the leading priests, the elders, and the teachers of religious law—the entire high council—met to discuss their next step. They bound Jesus, led him away, and took him to Pilate, the Roman governor. Pilate asked Jesus, “Are you the king of the Jews?”
Jesus replied, “You have said it.” Then the leading priests kept accusing him of many crimes, and Pilate asked him, “Aren’t you going to answer them? What about all these charges they are bringing against you?” But Jesus said nothing, much to Pilate’s surprise. —Mark 15:1-5 (NLT)
A gentle answer deflects anger, but harsh words make tempers flare. —Proverbs 15:1 (NLT)
Sometimes, as a leader, you RESPOND to criticism; other times, you just ABSORB it.
1) The courage to defend
2) The humility to absorb
3) The judgment to know which to do
Habit #3 - Exceptional leaders let God LEAD THEM.
Jesus allowed feelings of loneliness to propel Him into a deeper partnership with His Father.
Teach me to do your will, for you are my God. May your gracious Spirit lead me forward
on a firm footing. —Psalm 143:10 (NLT)
Before I can ever lead like Jesus, I must first learn how to be led by Jesus.
