Hebrews 13 context

Hebrews 13:1-7 (NKJV) says 1Let brotherly love continue. 2Do not forget to entertain

, for by so doing some have unwittingly entertained . 3Remember the prisoners as if chained with them—those who are mistreated—since you yourselves are in the body also. 4Marriage is honorable among all, and the bed undefiled; but and God will judge. 5Let your conduct be without covetousness; be content with such things as you have. For He Himself has said, “I will never leave you nor forsake you.” 6So we may boldly say: “The Lord is my helper; I will not fear. What can man do to me?” 7Remember those who rule over you, who have spoken the word of God to you, whose faith follow, considering the outcome of their conduct.

In this section we hear from God how to behave. Not as a prerequisite for salvation, but as an instruction for believers in their sanctification process. The core of the Christian life is not what we do for God. The core is what Jesus did for us.

Verses 1-3; verse 1 gives instruction to continue showing brotherly love. Directly followed by doing well to strangers/foreigners through hospitality. And followed by praying for those in prison or under physical persecution.

Q1 Listen to the teaching by David Guzik. Have you ever been asked for help from strangers? How did you decide what to do?

The main reason for (sex in) marriage is that there is a bond/glue between one man and one woman, for reproduction and pleasure.

Current society has stripped sex from its sacret meaning.

Marriage is dishonored by living together unmarried, by adultery, and by divorce. Also by neglect, or by redefinition.

Q2 Marital love with the bed undefiled is to be honored among us all (verse 4a). But what will happen to those who are guilty of the following sins in verse 4b?

Material life

Q3 Are you content with what you have (verse 5a)? Is Jesus enough (verse 5b)?

Q4 If you answered question 3 with two times YES, then verse 6 must be true for you. Is it?

Q5 Verse 7 seems to be awkward. Who is ruling over me? Is it my pastor? Or is it the leadership team, who speaks the Word, with the congregation? Does the end of verse 7 give me permission to consider the outcome of my pastor’s conduct?

This session dealt with several aspects of the Christian life. If you think that you have failed (or you think to be perfect), you may come to the cross. Confess and repent. And sing At the Cross.
