“A Thanksgiving Assignment – Part 1”

Main point: In 1 Chronicles 16:7-22, David gives Asaph and other Levites a Psalm of Thanksgiving. This Psalm prompts the people to praise their God.

Instructions: Take time to remember all that God has done in you, through you, and for you this past year. Next read 1 Chronicles 16:8-12 every day this week. Look at the lists of verbal praise and reflective praise that were taken from these verses. As David assigned Asaph to thank God, your assignment is to choose two ways each day from the lists that you will offer thanksgiving to God.

  3. Read 1 Thessalonians 5:16-18. What is God’s will for you?

  4. Read Philippians 4:6-8. Why are the two words “with thanksgiving” included in verse 6.

  5. What is the threefold goal of praise? How ought we to praise God?

  6. Of the commands to praise God verbally in verses 8-9, which do you practice most often? Which do you practice the least? Why?

  7. Of the commands to praise God reflectively in verses 10-13, which do you practice most often? What does that look like? Which do you practice least? Why?

  8. 1 Chronicles 16 is a great thanksgiving event for Israel. The Ark was back. Enemies had been subdued. David was the new king. All seemed well. What are some great thanksgiving events in your life? Have you given God the praise for those events?
