JEHOVAH-JIREH - THE LORD WILL PROVIDE

Text: Gen. 22:1-18

22 And it came to pass after these things, that God did tempt Abraham, and said unto him, Abraham: and he said, Behold, here I am.
2 And he said, Take now thy son, thine only son Isaac, whom thou lovest, and get thee into the land of Moriah; and offer him there for a burnt offering upon one of the mountains which I will tell thee of.
3 And Abraham rose up early in the morning, and saddled his ass, and took two of his young men with him, and Isaac his son, and clave the wood for the burnt offering, and rose up, and went unto the place of which God had told him.
4 Then on the third day Abraham lifted up his eyes, and saw the place afar off.
5 And Abraham said unto his young men, Abide ye here with the ass; and I and the lad will go yonder and worship, and come again to you.
6 And Abraham took the wood of the burnt offering, and laid it upon Isaac his son; and he took the fire in his hand, and a knife; and they went both of them together.
7 And Isaac spake unto Abraham his father, and said, My father: and he said, Here am I, my son. And he said, Behold the fire and the wood: but where is the lamb for a burnt offering?
8 And Abraham said, My son, God will provide himself a lamb for a burnt offering: so they went both of them together.
9 And they came to the place which God had told him of; and Abraham built an altar there, and laid the wood in order, and bound Isaac his son, and laid him on the altar upon the wood.
10 And Abraham stretched forth his hand, and took the knife to slay his son.
11 And the angel of the LORD called unto him out of heaven, and said, Abraham, Abraham: and he said, Here am I.
12 And he said, Lay not thine hand upon the lad, neither do thou any thing unto him: for now I know that thou fearest God, seeing thou hast not withheld thy son, thine only son from me.
13 And Abraham lifted up his eyes, and looked, and behold behind him a ram caught in a thicket by his horns: and Abraham went and took the ram, and offered him up for a burnt offering in the stead of his son.
14 And Abraham called the name of that place Jehovahjireh: as it is said to this day, In the mount of the LORD it shall be seen.
15 And the angel of the Lord called unto Abraham out of heaven the second time,
16 And said, By myself have I sworn, saith the LORD, for because thou hast done this thing, and hast not withheld thy son, thine only son:
17 That in blessing I will bless thee, and in multiplying I will multiply thy seed as the stars of the heaven, and as the sand which is upon the sea shore; and thy seed shall possess the gate of his enemies;
18 And in thy seed shall all the nations of the earth be blessed; because thou hast obeyed my voice.

Intro:

  • God will often use a compound connection to reveal something deeper about Himself.
  • The first compound name we’re going to study is Jehovah-Jireh.
  • Jehovah-Jireh is used only in the Word of God and yet it is a name that reveals an aspect of God’s character that is revealed throughout the Word of God and even in our own lives today, i.e. God’s providential care or provision.
  • Most of the compound names of God come from some historic Biblical event and teach that is able to meet some human need by some aspect of His character.

1. The Historical Setting In Which The Name Appears

  • This name appears in the resolution of the great climax of Abraham’s life (i.e. the greatest of faith in his life, the offering of his one and only son, Isaac).
  • Keep in mind that Abraham not only loved Isaac, he him.
  • God promised to make a “great nation,” and the fulfillment of that promise rested on this one and only son, Isaac.
  • If Isaac dies without having any children of his own, then the promise dies with him.

  • Trials are adverse circumstances that God introduces or allows in order to

where we are spiritually and to us for where He wants us to go.

  • Where did Abraham find the faith to follow God so quickly in fulfilling what seems like an absurd request?

  • We see it in the text and Hebrews 11. He was prepared to sacrifice his son because he believed that God would raise him up from the dead if need be to keep His promise.

  • Sometimes God allows you to be in a situation only

can solve so you can recognize that is the one who solved it.

  • While God know everything actual and potential, God doesn’t know everything experientially.

  • So when God says, “Now I know…” He’s not talking about information. He is saying to Abraham, “Now I have

    that you fear Me.”

  • Abraham takes the ram that is caught in the thicket and offers it to God as substitute.

  • As a result of God’s providential provision, Abraham named the place Jehovah-Jireh, The Lord Will Provide.
  • He discovered something about Jehovah on that day that would change his life forever.
  • We can learn and experience this same truth also: God provides.

2. The Meaning Of Jehovah-Jireh

  • Jehovah-Jireh can be rightly translated in three ways.

  • KJV - And Abraham called the name of that place Jehovah-jireh: as it is said to this day, in the mount of the LORD it shall be seen.

  • ASV - “it shall be provided.”
  • A Jewish version - “he shall be seen.”

    1) It shall be seen.

    • The word jireh is simply a transliteration of a Hebrew word which means “to , or foresee.” Thus the translation, It shall be seen.
    • Jehovah-Jireh thus means the Lord will see, or foresee.

    2) It shall be

    .

    • Anything God sees He also foresees, i.e. He has prevision.
    • Thus to God prevision is necessarily followed by provision, for He certainly will provide for that need which His foreseeing shows Him to exist.

    3) He shall be seen.

    • The phrase “it shall be seen” is the Hebrew word jeroeh which is the same word as jireh. It can be translated as “it shall be seen” or “he shall be seen” (i.e. provision shall be seen in the mount of the LORD.)

3. The Importance Of The Name Jehovah-Jireh

1) The

provision of a substitute sacrifice.

  • The name is important because of the immediate great provision of God. God provided a ram in the place of Isaac on the altar. The name was a constant reminder to Abraham of the grace wrought by God in this deliverance.

  • Jehovah-Jireh is revealed to us when God provides for our needs (felt needs, emotional needs, financial needs, health needs, trial needs, etc.)

2) The

provision of a substitute sacrifice.

  • The Mount Moriah of which he spoke saying, “In the mount of the LORD it shall be seen,” became the site of Calvary and the scene of that grand and awful sacrifice of God’s only begotten Son, who was put under judgment for sin, and became our Substitute.
  • Abraham spoke practically and prophetically when He said, “In the mount of the LORD He shall be seen.”
  • Was it not this to which the Lord Jesus Christ Himself referred in John 8:56, when He said, “Your father Abraham rejoiced to see my day: and he saw it, and was glad.”

  • Isaac is a type of Christ, the one and only son sacrificed.

  • The ram is a type of Christ, the substitutionary sacrifice. The ram took Isaac’s place. Jesus took our place.

4. An Important Application Of Jehovah-Jireh

  • In the fulfilling of the promised Lamb’s sacrifice upon Mount Calvary (Moriah) is the promise of provision needed in the Christian life. (Rom. 8:32, Phil. 4:19).
  • If we have trusted God (Jehovah) for salvation, our greatest of all needs, then we can trust Him for our every need.

  • God pre-sees to provide. He not only pre-sees the need, He sees our obedience

  • God can provide our needs, but He must see our obedience.
  • Sometimes that obedience will call for our own sacrifice of “our Isaac.” Sacrifice the blessing because of our love for the Blesser.

  • Abraham received more blessings from God:

    1) A new

    from God. (v. 12)

    2) A new

. Abraham and Isaac had been to the altar together, and now Isaac was a “living sacrifice.”

    3) A new

    . (vv. 16-18)

    4) A new

    . (v. 14)
