Sermon Title: Get Where You’re Supposed To Be

Scripture: 2 Samuel 11:1-5 (NIV)

Introduction

Today, we delve into one of the most famous stories about David, a moment that sets him apart from other kings. Join us as we explore the consequences of not being where you’re supposed to be.

Scripture: 2 Samuel 11:1-5 (NIV)

  • In the spring, when kings go off to war, David sent Joab and the Israelite army to battle, but he remained in Jerusalem.
  • One evening, David, unable to sleep, walked on the palace roof and saw Bathsheba bathing. A chain of events unfolded, leading to a grave sin.

When Kings Go Off to War

  • Kings traditionally led their armies to war in spring.
  • David, this time, stayed behind to handle administrative tasks.
  • He was where he shouldn’t have been.

The Roof Encounter

  • David was on his palace roof, a common place for rest.
  • The story begins with David’s gaze upon Bathsheba, a woman bathing.
  • The problem didn’t start with this encounter.

The Root of the Problem

  • The problem didn’t begin with a phone call or message; it started with David’s absence from his rightful place.
  • David’s wandering eyes were a result of not being where he should have been.

Sin and the Wrong Place

  • Being in the wrong place at the wrong time leads to sin.
  • Examples from the Bible:
    • Jonah went in the wrong direction.
    • Aaron made idols in Moses’ absence.
    • Judas left the disciples to betray Jesus.
    • Mary and Martha failed to rest when needed.
    • Adam and Cain were questioned about their whereabouts.

Ecclesiastes 3:1-10

  • Emphasizes the importance of being in the right place at the right time.
  • Sin occurs when we step outside God’s intended time and place.
  • Sexual sin is an example of this principle.

Not Just Physical

  • Being in the right place extends beyond the physical realm.
  • It includes our thoughts, emotions, and spiritual life.
  • Resistance to temptation is easier when we’re in the right place.

Where Are You? - Next Steps

  • Ask yourself: Where are you?
  • Are you where you’re supposed to be?
  • Be diligent in aligning your mind, body, and soul with where you ought to be.

Prayer

Heavenly Father, help us to recognize when we’re not where we’re supposed to be. Guide us to align our thoughts, actions, and hearts with Your will. Grant us the strength to resist temptation and stay in the right place. In Jesus’ name, we pray. Amen.
