I AM KING!

Text: Mark 11:1-11

1 And when they came nigh to Jerusalem, unto Bethphage and Bethany, at the Mount of Olives, he sendeth forth two of his disciples,
2 And saith unto them, Go your way into the village over against you: and as soon as ye be entered into it, ye shall find a colt tied, whereon never man sat; loose him, and bring him.
3 And if any man say unto you, Why do ye this? say ye that the Lord hath need of him; and straightway he will send him hither.
4 And they went their way, and found the colt tied by the door without in a place where two ways met; and they loose him.
5 And certain of them that stood there said unto them, What do ye, loosing the colt?
6 And they said unto them even as Jesus had commanded: and they let them go.
7 And they brought the colt to Jesus, and cast their garments on him; and he sat upon him.
8 And many spread their garments in the way: and others cut down branches off the trees, and strawed them in the way.
9 And they that went before, and they that followed, cried, saying, Hosanna; Blessed is he that cometh in the name of the Lord:
10 Blessed be the kingdom of our father David, that cometh in the name of the Lord: Hosanna in the highest.
11 And Jesus entered into Jerusalem, and into the temple: and when he had looked round about upon all things, and now the eventide was come, he went out unto Bethany with the twelve.

1. Jesus Declared Himself King By Fulfilling Prophecy (vv. 2-8)

  • Jesus fulfills the prophecy of Zechariah 9:9. He declared His kingship to the nation of Israel. By riding on the donkey Jesus asserted His rule over both the and the .
  • He did not ride into the city in a show of force like a warrior king. Instead of riding a warhorse, Jesus sat atop a symbol of peace, a donkey.

2. Jesus Declared Himself King By Cleansing The Temple (cf. Mt. 21:12-13)

  • Mark only tells us that Jesus went to the temple (v.11), but Matthew tells us what He did while He was there.
  • To explain what he was doing, Jesus quoted Isaiah 56:7.
  • There are two things that make this action and this Old Testament quote so significant. One is that the context is about the coming of God. So Jesus is putting himself in the position of the coming king. And, two, is that the context is global, not just Jewish. (See the context Isaiah 56:6-8.)

3. Jesus Declared Himself King By Performing Miracles (cf. Mt. 21:14)

  • Why do the healing of the blind and the lame in the temple after coming into Jerusalem on a donkey mean “I am the coming king?”
  • Because in Isaiah 35 the prophet describes the coming Messiah as a of the blind and lame. (cf. Isa 35:4-6).

4. Jesus Declared Himself King By Receiving Acclamation (vv. 8-10); cf. Mt. 21:8-9; 15-16)

  • Jesus declares his kingship by the way he responds to what the people and the children are doing and saying (i.e. he receives their acclamation that He is the King).
  • The chief priests became angry. They asked in Mt 21:16, “Do You hear what these children are saying?”
  • Jesus answers their question with one simple word and then an absolutely astonishing quote from Psalm 8. He answers, “ , I do.” “Have you never read, ‘Out of the mouth of infants and nursing babies You have prepared praise for Yourself’?”

Bottom line: Jesus is King! But, He is only your saving King if you believe in, trust upon, and yield to Him.
