Fellowship—Relationship with a Purpose

· Describe your favorite painting. Do you have a poster or print of it in your house?

‌Growth—Thinking About Spiritual Matters

· Read Mark 1:14-5:43. What is one section that caught your attention? Why?

· After reading through this section, which journey to Jesus most closely resembles your own: the crowds, the disciples, those who were healed, or the religious leaders? Explain your answer.

· Why would Simon, Andrew, James, and John leave their work as fishermen to follow Jesus? (Mark 1:16-20) Was the tradeoff worth it?

· How did the crowds view Jesus? See Mark 1:32-33; 2:1-4; 3:7-8. What was their interest in him? Are you more interested in Jesus’ identity or in Jesus’ actions in your life? Which do you think He wants?

· Jesus’ “power encounters” with demons and those who were plagued by evil spirits were dramatic. Have you ever witnessed this kind of spiritual activity? Do you think evil forces are still at work today?

· How did the religious leaders react to Jesus when it came to these encounters? See Mark 3:22-30. How did the evil spirits react? See Mark 1:21-28. Why did the demons have greater clarity about Jesus’ identity?

· Look over the parables in Mark 4. In what way is Jesus’ teaching easy? In what way is it hard to understand?

· Look again at Jesus’ encounters with people who were exhibiting faith or trust in Him. Describe his attitude and emotion toward them. What can you learn regarding your encounters with Him?

Prayer—Taking Your Thoughts to God

· Pray for God to help you keep Jesus’ identity in mind as you worship on Sundays, but also as you go through life on Monday-Saturday.
