Defining our Terms:

*Adultery—*Sexual intercourse with a person other than his or her spouse.

Jesus’ Definition—Any Desire for sexual intimacy with someone other than your wife or husband.
1. “You have heard that it was said, ‘You shall not commit adultery.’ 28 But I say to you that everyone who looks at a woman with lustful intent has already committed adultery with her in his heart.(Matthew 5:27-28)

Ideal—Sex to be between one man and one woman for life. Sexuality is good and a gift from God to creation. It is to be celebrated, pursued, and enjoyed. In fact, sexuality is an act of worship, as a husband and wife offer up their intimate lives together as a thanksgiving to God for the wonder and joy of marriage.

Therefore a man shall leave his father and his mother and hold fast to his wife, and they shall become one flesh. 25 And the man and his wife were both naked and were not ashamed. —Genesis 2:24-25

However, just like all good things, we as fallen creatures can take a good thing and make it an ultimate thing, turning the good thing into an idol (see commandment 1-2). By doing this we take something like sex and make it a substitution for God, leaving us in an constant state of dissatisfaction….

Therefore, we need to constantly be reminded of God’s will for our life and simultaneously be warned of the ways we can veer off God’s righteous path and wind up stuck in some miserable situations….Hence, we come to Proverbs 5…
