WEEK 1: WORDS

Series key verse: “A new command I give you: Love one another. As I have loved you, you must love one another. By this all will know you are my disciples, if you love one another.” John 13:34,35

Do not let any unwholesome talk come out of your mouths, but only what is helpful for building others up according to their needs, that it may benefit those who listen. Ephesians 4:29

Someone I’d like to build up:

How to build one another up: Three insights from Proverbs

1. Use

rather than words

A gentle answer turns away wrath, but a harsh word stirs up anger.
Pr. 15:1

Through patience a ruler can be persuaded, and a gentle tongue can break a bone.
Pr. 25:15

2. Use

rather than words

Gentle words are a tree of life; a deceitful tongue crushes the spirit. Pr. 15:4 NLT

In the end, people appreciate frankness more than flattery. Pr. 28:23 NLT

3. Use

rather than words

A word aptly spoken is like apples of gold in settings of silver. Pr. 25:11

The lips of the righteous know what is fitting
Pr. 10:32 NIV

Yes… but how?

A wise man’s heart guides his mouth… Pr. 16:23

(Jesus) “… out of the overflow of the heart the mouth speaks.” Matthew 12:34

DISCUSSION QUESTIONS

  1. Read through and reflect on the One Another verses. What stirs you? What challenges you?
  2. What difference would a One Another-ing church make to a watching world? How is God calling you to contribute?
  3. Read Romans 12:9-21. This passage lists several ways we as followers of Christ can “build one another up.” What gets in the way of this regularly happening among God’s people? Which of these come most naturally to you? Are there ones that you struggle to live out?
  4. Who is one person you will focus on “building up” this week?
