Luke 7:11-17 / ESV

About Today’s Passage:
+ City of Nain’s only reference in the Bible
+ Reports one of Jesus’ greatest miracles
+ Highlights Jesus’ concern for a mother in despair

1. God meets us at the

of our crisis
Luke 7:11-12 / ESV, “Soon afterward he went to a town called Nain, and his disciples and a great crowd went with him. 12 As he drew near to the gate of the town, behold, a man who had died was being carried out, the only son of his mother, and she was a widow, and a considerable crowd from the town was with her.”

Zephaniah 3:17b / NLT, “With his love, he will calm all your fears.”

2. God gave us inward feelings of

so that we can make outward contributions
Luke 7:13-14 / ESV, “And when the Lord saw her, he had compassion on her and said to her, “Do not weep.” 14 Then he came up and touched the bier, and the bearers stood still. And he said, “Young man, I say to you, arise.”

Matthew 14:14 / CSB, “When he went ashore, he saw a large crowd, had compassion on them, and healed their sick.

Matthew 15:32 / CSB, “Jesus called his disciples and said, “I have compassion on the crowd, because they’ve already stayed with me three days and have nothing to eat. I don’t want to send them away hungry, otherwise they might collapse on the way.”

3. God’s purpose is for us to

more about our family than ourselves
Luke 7: 15-17 / ESV,  “And the dead man sat up and began to speak, and Jesus gave him to his mother. 16 Fear seized them all, and they glorified God, saying, “A great prophet has arisen among us!” and “God has visited his people!” 17 And this report about him spread through the whole of Judea and all the surrounding country.”

John 19:25-27 / ESV, “Standing by the cross of Jesus were his mother, his mother’s sister, Mary the wife of Clopas, and Mary Magdalene. “When Jesus saw his mother and the disciple whom he loved standing nearby, he said to his mother, “Woman, behold, your son!” 27 Then he said to the disciple, “Behold, your mother!” And from that hour the disciple took her to his own home.”
