The Parable of the Vineyard Owner
He Was Perfect, Part 48
Luke 20:9-19

Luke 20:13-
“What should I do? I will send my beloved son. Perhaps they will respect him.”

The Background
1. The story is told in the Temple courts, on Tuesday of Holy Week.
2. Everything in Luke 20-21 happens on Tuesday of Holy Week.
3. The day before Jesus had shut down the entire Temple mount, including the
afternoon sacrifice.
4. The Temple leaders were not happy with Him. (vs. 1-2).
5. Like all Middle Eastern stories, this parable is a chiasm.

The Chiasm
1. The Vineyard is rented, v. 9.
2. A servant is sent, beaten, sent away, v. 10.
3. A servant is sent, beaten, shamed, sent away, v. 11.
4. A servant is sent, wounded, thrown out, v. 12.
5. “What should I do?” v. 13a.
5’ The beloved son is sent, v. 13b.
4’ The son is thrown out, killed, v. 15a.
3’ What will the owner do? v. 15b
2’ He will come and kill the tenants, v. 16a.
1’ The Vineyard will be rented to others, v. 16b.

The Point
1. The Owner’s mercy is unbelievable.
2. He is in a position to exact revenge and chooses not to.
3. God’s mercy is unbelievable, until you believe.
