Rejoice in the Lord Always! Philippians 4:4-7

  1. Zephaniah tells us that joy springs forth from the very in God’s Word, the promises God makes to his people, including us.
  2. Even through his question, John the Baptist leads us to Jesus as the one who God’s promises to us.
  3. Paul brings together the sweetness of reasonableness with the sheer audacity of joy. Jesus is the of both.

The word for reasonableness in our text comes from the Greek word epieikḗs. It means, ‘that which is right or fitting,’ and it is also used to describe God’s kindness as the Supreme Ruler. As king, Jesus has the gentleness that only one with full power may display. Why was it appropriate that Jesus, then, came to our world as a baby?

How does this fill us with reasonableness, too, and joy?
