Series: Romans – Grasping The Gospel
Sermon Title: Part 18 – Say Yes To God
Scripture: Romans 6:15-22
Speaker: Pastor Mark Pospisil
Questions:
When you think of the words “tyrant” or “tyranny,” what comes to mind?
Before coming to Christ, Paul describes us as being slaves to sin (Romans 6:16), with sin being our master, demanding our obedient service? In what ways does sin act as a tyrannical master? What payment does sin provide to us for our obedience to it?
Romans 6:16 and 18 remind us that when we believe and are born again, we are permanently freed from our slavery to sin. We have a new Master. We now have the ability to obey God. In what ways is our new Master different from our old one?
In Romans 6:17, Paul refers to becoming “obedient from the heart.” How would you explain “obedient from the heart” in your own words?
In Romans 6:19, Paul speaks about “presenting your members,” a phrase Pastor Mark explains as being those things we say “yes” to. Looking at the two options Paul presents in this verse—saying “yes” to impurity and to lawlessness, or saying “yes” to righteousness—which option are you finding yourself saying “yes” to more often?
Pastor Mark warned us of settling for “quick solutions” and “false answers” when it comes to presenting ourselves as slaves of righteousness. In what ways can anything less than a wholehearted commitment to obedience to Christ turn into a search for a quick answer?
As you read Romans 6:22, what does the fact that you have now been set free from sin mean to you? How does knowing that you are now a slave to God affect your decision-making this week?
