1 Corinthians 6:1-11

1 Corinthians 6:-11

1 If any of you has a dispute with another, do you dare to take it before the ungodly for judgment instead of before the Lord’s people?

2 Or do you not know that the Lord’s people will judge the world? And if you are to judge the world, are you not competent to judge trivial cases?

3 Do you not know that we will judge angels? How much more the things of this life!

4 Therefore, if you have disputes about such matters, do you ask for a ruling from those whose way of life is scorned in the church?

5 I say this to shame you. Is it possible that there is nobody among you wise enough to judge a dispute between believers?

6 But instead, one brother takes another to court—and this in front of unbelievers!

7 The very fact that you have lawsuits among you means you have been completely defeated already. Why not rather be wronged? Why not rather be cheated?

8 Instead, you yourselves cheat and do wrong, and you do this to your brothers and sisters.

9 Or do you not know that wrongdoers will not inherit the kingdom of God? Do not be deceived: Neither the sexually immoral nor idolaters nor adulterers nor men who have sex with men

10 nor thieves nor the greedy nor drunkards nor slanderers nor swindlers will inherit the kingdom of God.

11 And that is what some of you were. But you were washed, you were sanctified, you were justified in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ and by the Spirit of our God.

Becoming a Christian changes your primary .

As a Christian, you are a of God.

As a Christian, you stand to God’s kingdom.

But Christians get puzzled about our identity.

We get puzzled about what it means to or (v. 7-8).

  • A win in front of

    is a for Christlikeness (v. 7a).

  • A

for Christlikeness is better than a in court (vv. 7b-c).

“Do not repay anyone evil for evil. Be careful to do what is right in the eyes of everyone. 18 If it is possible, as far as it depends on you, live at peace with everyone. 19 Do not take revenge, my dear friends, but leave room for God’s wrath, for it is written: ‘It is mine to avenge; I will repay,’ says the Lord. 20 On the contrary: ‘If your enemy is hungry, feed him; if he is thirsty, give him something to drink. In doing this, you will heap burning coals on his head.’ 21 Do not be overcome by evil, but overcome evil with good.” —Romans 12:17-21

  • A win-at-all-costs

    is completely un-Christlike (v. 8).

We get puzzled about how Christians (vv. 9-11).

  • Christians live because we are

    spiritually into God’s family (v. 8b-9a).

  • If you live in sin, you are

    a Christian (vv. 9-10).

  • If you live in Christ, you’ve been

    by Christ’s work (v. 11).

Big Idea: out your identity as a Christian.

As a Christian, seek through the church or the “L.”

As a Christian, put to sinful patterns from your life.

“Put to death, therefore, whatever belongs to your earthly nature: sexual immorality, impurity, lust, evil desires and greed, which is idolatry. 6 Because of these, the wrath of God is coming.” —Colossians 3:5-6

As a Christian, strive to live a life.
