Three promises from Jesus that bring hope:

1. You will have

but it will

No

is final

“Truly, truly, I say to you, you will weep and lament, but the world will rejoice. You will be sorrowful, but your sorrow will turn into joy.” John 16:20 ESV

NLT: “You will grieve, but your grief will suddenly turn to wonderful joy.”

2. You will but you will

No

is final

“The hour is coming when I will no longer speak to you in figures of speech but will tell you plainly about the Father.” John 16:25b ESV

3. You will but Jesus will

No

is final

“A time is coming and in fact has come when you will be scattered, each
to your own home. You will leave me all alone. Yet I am not alone, for my Father is with me. I have told you these things, so that in me you may have peace. In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world.” John 16:32,33 NIV

QUESTIONS For personal reflection or group discussion
1. Have you ever had a time in your life when a hardship––like an unwanted move or job loss or difficult season at work––actually led to joy? What happened?
2. Read John 16:20. Jesus does not merely say, “Your sorrow will be followed by joy.” He says their sorrow would turn into joy—what brings them sorrow will be part of what brings them joy! How did this happen for them? How does this apply to your own sorrows and grief?
3. Read John 16:21. Jesus uses an analogy to explain how something that brings pain can also be a source of joy. How can this help you understand your own grief in light of the resurrection?
4. Read John 16:32. Jesus says he knows his disciples will desert him. But he says he is telling them because he wants them to have peace and not lose heart. What does this tell you about his message to you when you fail?
