Compassion = Discipleship Training 101

A little Review of Last week - Editing the speculation model for success and revamping it as a revelation model.

  1. Instead of Considering YOUR dreams alone - Allow God to direct your dreams.

  2. Instead of clarifying YOUR values. - Clarify the values that God wants for your life.

  3. Ask yourself what are God’s goals for my life?

  4. Seek God incredibly hard - find out who He is

  5. Don’t stop believing that He can do it.

  6. Fellowship with others, Share with others, Serve others and serve alongside others.

  7. Live an abundant life through Jesus Christ

Today we focus on:

  1. Seeking God incredibly hard - find out who he is
  2. Fellowship with others, Share with others, SERVE OTHERS and serve alongside others.

A verse to drive our purpose:
Matthew 28:19-20 - Make Disciples, Discipleship

19 Therefore, go and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit. 20 Teach these new disciples to obey all the commands I have given you. And be sure of this: I am with you always, even to the end of the age.”

Myth of Discipleship - that we have to know everything there is to know about the Bible, that we have to have everything together ourselves and that we have to live our lives like saints.

The Reality - None of us live up to that expectation. The only thing that is for certain in our lives is that God sent his son Jesus to this earth, Jesus died for our sins on a cross, he saved us from an eternity of damnation, he rose three days later and he asked us completely unworthy people to be a part of his story in helping others come to know the power of his Grace!

The Good News is, he gave us a pretty incredible example of exactly how to do this in the way Jesus lived His life on this earth.

**Jesus = the Compassionate one

Mark 10:41-45 New Living Translation (NLT)
41 When the ten other disciples heard what James and John had asked, they were indignant. 42 So Jesus called them together and said, “You know that the rulers in this world lord it over their people, and officials flaunt their authority over those under them. 43 But among you it will be different. Whoever wants to be a leader among you must be your servant, 44 and whoever wants to be first among you must be the slave of everyone else. 45 For even the Son of Man came not to be served but to serve others and to give his life as a ransom for many.”

Three Takeway Points

  1. Compassion = Discipleship (Mark 10:35-45)

  2. Your Story provides space for Compassion

    • Rely on who you are and the journey you’ve been on to lead you in showing compassion to others
  3. It is essential that as a church body we must be compassionate towards one another.

    • In John 13:1-17 Jesus sits down with his disciples just before his crucifixion, these were the original Christ followers who had walked side by side with Him and he performs perhaps one of the most compassionate and humble acts in all of the Bible.

John 13:1-9
13 1.Before the Passover celebration, Jesus knew that his hour had come to leave this world and return to his Father. He had loved his disciples during his ministry on earth, and now he loved them to the very end.[a] 2 It was time for supper, and the devil had already prompted Judas,[b] son of Simon Iscariot, to betray Jesus. 3 Jesus knew that the Father had given him authority over everything and that he had come from God and would return to God. 4 So he got up from the table, took off his robe, wrapped a towel around his waist, 5 and poured water into a basin. Then he began to wash the disciples’ feet, drying them with the towel he had around him.
6 When Jesus came to Simon Peter, Peter said to him, “Lord, are you going to wash my feet?”
7 Jesus replied, “You don’t understand now what I am doing, but someday you will.”
8 “No,” Peter protested, “you will never ever wash my feet!”
Jesus replied, “Unless I wash you, you won’t belong to me.”
9 Simon Peter exclaimed, “Then wash my hands and head as well, Lord, not just my feet!”

John 13:12-17
12 After washing their feet, he put on his robe again and sat down and asked, “Do you understand what I was doing? 13 You call me ‘Teacher’ and ‘Lord,’ and you are right, because that’s what I am. 14 And since I, your Lord and Teacher, have washed your feet, you ought to wash each other’s feet. 15 I have given you an example to follow. Do as I have done to you. 16 I tell you the truth, slaves are not greater than their master. Nor is the messenger more important than the one who sends the message. 17 Now that you know these things, God will bless you for doing them.
